A single centre experience of refeeding hypophosphataemia and refeeding syndrome in parenteral nutrition and a proposal for a sub-fulminant categorisation
Abstract Refeeding syndrome (RFS) is an uncommon, but potentially serious, complication of nutrition therapy. There remains a lack of consensus as to the clinical definition of RFS and refeeding hypophosphataemia (RH), and what measures should be included to assess risk.
Could a Trump-driven trade crisis spur us to rethink economic growth?

Green Québec: a whiter shade of pale
And although my eyes were open They might as well have been closed —Procol Harem The Québec state is currently presided over by the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) and piloted by former airline boss François Legault who won the last provincial election in a landslide and holds 90 seats in a 125-member house. A steamroller majority—yet rooted in only slightly over 40 percent of the vote. Legault’s style of rule could kindly be called paternalistic nationalism.
The Kissinger myth
Back in the day – Henry Kissinger’s and mine too – a folk singer named Tom Paxton penned a protest song entitled the ‘White Bones of Allende’. The year was 1977, and Dr K was at the height of his power. Paxton’s tune captured the darker side of the Kissinger myth, beyond the state dinners, shuttle diplomacy and clever repartee, to the human collateral damage the ‘great’ statesman believed was necessary to maintain the wealth of Corporate America.
Hypocrisy and war
“The first casualty of war,” as the famous dictum coined by American Senator Hiram Johnson in 1917 has it, “is truth.” What fuels militarism is the belief that your side is completely in the right while the enemy is entirely in the wrong. Simple-minded posturing rules the day. While disheartening, it is hardly surprising that Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine has given rise to hypocritical posturing on almost all sides.

The Ukraine invasion and the peace movement
Protest in Stockholm against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Photo by Frankie Fouganthin/Wikimedia Commons. There have by now been a plethora of analyses of the Russian invasion of Ukraine—some thoughtful and many simply rhetorical. There are two main lines of argument, at least on the left: one that primarily blames NATO expansion for provoking Russia, and the other pointing the finger directly at Vladimir Putin. It is as if ‘blame’ is in short supply and needs to be carefully rationed.

Living well
Analysis 8 December 2021 The obsession with full employment is a dead end in a world on the ecological brink. Richard Swift explores what could sustain us instead. What’s the use of the Pandora Papers?
The Pandora Papers revealed the inner workings of a shadow economy hiding wealth in tax havens such as Monaco (pictured), Panama, Dubai, Switzerland and the Cayman Islands. Photo from Shutterstock. The Canadian chapter of the Pandora Papers, as the journalistic exposé of colossal asset concealment by the world’s rich and powerful has been dubbed, shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone paying serious attention to tax issues and the enforcement practices of the Canadian Revenue Agency.
Reimagining the left in times of crisis
Challenging the Right, Augmenting the Left: Recasting Leftist Imagination Edited by Robert Latham, A. T. Kingsmith, Julian von Bargen and Niko Block Fernwood, 2020 It is a commonplace on the left to speak of the crisis of capitalism, often claimed to be terminal. What is less obvious is how the left can take advantage of such crises to bring the predatory beast to ground. Even rarer is the admission that there is also a crisis in socialism.
Introducing...Pedro Castillo
Introducing...Pedro Castillo 13 August 2021 Richard Swift paints a mixed picture of Peru’s unlikely choice for president. In an election judged free and fair (even by the US State Department), the 51-year-old Pedro Castillo emerged as the unlikely winner of Peru’s presidential race on 6 June. The former elementary school teacher from a small village in the northern region of Cajamarca narrowly edged out Keiko Fujimori in a runoff second ballot.

The bespectacled, 57-year-old Arce swept to power in Bolivia on 18 October 2020 as the presidential candidate of the leftist Movement for Socialism (MAS). His total vote share – over 55 per cent – surprised even the most ardent of MAS partisans.

The trouble with normal is it always gets worse
2 July 2020 A clamour to return to the status quo after Covid-19 would be bad news for people and the planet, argues Richard Swift. We may never get a better chance for a new normal. Back to work: garment workers in Dhaka, Bangladesh, after factories re-opened in May.
Pure Bathing Culture Announce 'Carrido' EP, Share "Something Silver": Listen
The last time we heard from the Portland duo (and Band To Watch) Pure Bathing Culture, it was with last year’s excellent Night Pass, an album that found Sarah Versprille and Daniel Hindman digging deeper into the soft rock elements of their sound. Today, they’re announcing that album’s successor, a new EP called Carrido that comes from some deeply personal history and loss. In 2018, the music world lost the producer and multi-faceted musician Richard Swift.
COLUMN: Malloy Wrapped Up Spring Season in Unusual Fashion while Looking to Future
By Richard Swift IMC Student Chris Malloy is a veteran of college golf wars, both as a player and as a coach. But this spring was like no other he has experienced, which was the case for everyone associated with college sports. “We can’t practice. We can’t play. We can’t have team meetings,” Malloy said in April as the school year was winding down and students were doing classwork online. It was in March that the entire sports year came to a screeching halt.

This year in protest
24 December 2019 Over a dozen countries saw millions take to the streets this year. Richard Swift asks if these mass revolts have anything in common. Enough is enough Some see it as a wildfire of democracy while others view it as the cancer of instability. Call it what you want, revolt is in the air and spreading almost everywhere.

Gone with the wind in Dominica
‘It’s all mashed up.’ Dominicans used to reserve this expression for bus crashes, often accompanied by a ‘so sorry for you’ for the hapless victims. Now it could be used to describe the entire island. Last September, Hurricane Maria swept through the eastern Caribbean, lingering for six deadly hours over the lush forest cover and vulnerable villages in Dominica, one of the region’s poorest countries.
Whose streets are these? Political space is shrinking around the world
It beggared belief – a line of armoured St. Louis police chanting ‘Whose streets? Our streets!’ But that’s exactly how they trumpeted their power in September as they cleared the streets of people protesting against police brutality. The officers were celebrating the acquittal of one of their own on charges of the unjustified killing of a black motorist. Of course, it is no surprise to anyone that heavily armed police control US streets, often acting like armed militias occupying poor communities.
Nawrocki’s Displaced/Misplaced exposes plight of migrant workers
Norman Nawroki, long a stunningly creative voice from out of Montréal’s anarchist community, combines spoken word with guitar, drum, piano and some very haunting violin in this compilation to benefit the city’s Immigrant Workers centre and Solidarity Across Borders. There were other instruments I couldn’t even recognize. Nawrocki’s political poetry blends acute observation of the plight of migrant workers and refugees with musical and background voice arrangements.
From friends to foes: South Sudan’s power pair.
From Asmara to Addis, it’s an all too familiar story for Africans – yesterday’s freedom fighters become today’s ambitious autocrats.
NDP needs to leave its comfort zone
Thirteen million votes and a net gain of 30 seats is a remarkable achievement for Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party in the recent 2017 U.K. election shocker. Party insiders and conventional punditry had decreed Corbyn’s “loonie Left” socialism unelectable, indeed the “death knell” of the British Left. But Corbyn, with his stubborn principles and homespun style, came to represent a kind of anti-politics to an electorate tired of being lied to by the slick and the slippery.

Hope For Imagining a World Beyond Corporate Control - Resilience
This post originally appeared in On The Commons. An excerpt from the recent book SOS: Alternatives to Capitalism (New Internationalist Publications). Richard Swift: The commons is not just a battlefield between corporate predators and those who resist them – it is also a source of hope for those willing to imagine a world beyond capitalism. It represents a space between the private market and the political state in which humanity can control and democratically root our common wealth.
Facing up to the capitalist within
It’s easy to blame the economic system for causing social and environmental problems, but what is that system built on? Isn’t it us? “Prayers on deck, slaves under the deck—John Newton’s Christian slave ship.” Credit: http://emmock.com/2013/01/22/bible-blog-945/ John Newton (1725-1807) is best known for penning the hymn Amazing Grace in the later years of his life as a minister in the Church of England.
New Internationalist
Populism sure is getting bad reviews. All manner of evil is getting laid at its door: racism, xenophobia, authoritarianism, jingoism – and that’s just the start. The conventional view is that populism is an irrational and impatient response to modern dilemmas that are best solved by conventional politics and economics.
The Transition Movements meets De-Growth

Tax cheating, easy living
Should I declare it? It’s a question many of us ask as tax time rolls around. Aside from the fear of getting caught, why do we actually pay taxes? After all, anyone’s individual taxes don’t amount to very much in the overall scheme of things. Who would miss them? And then there are all those irritating things governments waste our taxes on – corporate subsidies, expensive military hardware, big salaries for high-handed bureaucrats.
HotDocs Festival - Film review special
This is a polished documentary biopic of one of the great innovators of mainstream US television. Lear is now a dynamic 92-year-old, still full of energy and ideas. The film strings together some fabulous music with often amusing footage from Lear’s youth (he grew up in a poor and broken Jewish New York family) to later public appearances on talk shows. Throughout, Lear is the very model of wit and grace.
The Degrowth Paradigm
The degrowth movement is a relatively new contender in the economic and political debates that swirl around humanity's future. Degrowthers believe we need a more modest and sane alternative to the constant pressures of expansion that are destroying the ecological basis of our existence. Author and essayist Richard Swift explores the degrowth alternative, in theory and in practice. **This episode originally aired December 13, 2013. "Growth has become an element of faith.
