WORCESTER – The Westfield Starfires scored the first run of the game, but big second and fourth innings propelled the Worcester Bravehearts to an 11-3 win on Thursday. Fairleigh Dickinson University sophomore Chris Strout got the start for Westfield (11-18). After a scoreless first inning, Louisiana Tech sophomore Cooper Smith got the first hit of the game for the Starfires with a one-out single, and then stole second.

HARTFORD, Conn. — Connecticut fans witnessed a homecoming celebration on Thursday night for the ages. Former UConn star Paige Bueckers led the Dallas Wings to a dramatic, double-digit comeback over the Connecticut Sun, 86-83 at PeoplesBank Arena. Bueckers powered the rally with a game-high 25 points and seven assists, scoring 11 points in the fourth quarter on a perfect 4 of 4 from the field to clinch the victory.

Health experts are warning Americans headed to the beach for the Fourth of July weekend about a rise in cases of the flesh-eating bacteria Vibrio vulnificus. From the northeast to the south, alerts have been issued to raise awareness. New York health officials report researchers discovered the bacteria in multiple Long Island waterways. In Florida, there have been nine confirmed cases of Vibrio vulnificus — already surpassing the number reported this time last year.

CDC warns of explosive diarrhea parasite on rise in US; Here symptoms and how to treat

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a report Wednesday indicating cases of a parasitic infection that causes “explosive” watery diarrhea are on the rise in the United States. Cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal illness, has sickened dozens of people in Michigan and popped up in clusters around the country. The CDC reports cases have been on the rise in multiple states since May and at least 20 people have been hospitalized nationwide.

The extreme heat will continue across Massachusetts on Friday, with predicted afternoon heat index values between 100 to 110 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Boston and Springfield broke 60-year-old high temperature records on Thursday, and more records could be broken throughout the state on Friday as highs in most of Massachusetts hover around 100 degrees. The Worcester and Springfield areas are predicted to experience heat indexes well into the 100s.
