Searching for a Practice
For years, I have been intrigued by the Buddhist focus on practice. The idea is that of putting together ideas found in early Buddhist writings and creating a life that adheres to those ideas. It is also related to such core Buddhist principles as the four noble truths and the eight-fold path, as well such principles as abstaining from taking life and using false speech. The goal is attaining freedom from birth and nirvana.
Chinatown Homeless
Before a recent trip to San Francisco my wife and I heard about the homeless problem in the city. It sounded as if the issue had gotten out-of-control. We even heard reports that the problem was particularly bad around the TransAmerica Building where we were staying. This area is adjacent to San Francisco's Chinatown. I can happily report that we experienced no such problem. While we did see homeless people, they were mainly congregated in the city parks. No one threatened or bothered us.
Broadening Bioethics
If the coronavirus pandemic taught us anything, it’s that existing social inequities have an outsized impact upon the health of certain populations. This creates a need to think even more broadly and critically about health and to call attention to the impacts of health disparities and structural racism. In Bioethics Reenvisioned, professors Nancy King, Gail Henderson, and Larry Churchill take on this task admirably as it applies to the relatively young field of bioethics.

That’s the thesis statement behind journalist Amy Westervelt’s Forget “Having It All,” an ambitious book that aims to understand how current notions of motherhood in America came to be.
A Dose Of Reality
There is a certain sense of regret that those of us over fifty may feel when reading the popular literature on healthy living. Much of this genre advances lifestyle changes purporting not only to make us healthier but to extend life as well. But what about all of the years we’ve spent not following these recommendations? Are we not going to live healthily into our eighties and beyond because we failed to adhere to a certain diet or engage in mindfulness practices when we were younger?
Unhealthy Climate
From a political perspective, in the United States climate change creates more controversy than consensus. While many scientists accept it as a fact that climate change is taking place and that greenhouse gases are to blame, many politicians and their constituents disagree. As a result, efforts to address the issue are difficult to enact.
