Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I wrote a newspaper column about music for three years for the Greenville, MI Daily News starting at 17. Some local features as well.

Why did you become a journalist?

I was the editor of my high school paper, and I liked observing things and people, so the two just sort of came together for me.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes, I was the co-editor. I also took every English, rhetoric and composition class the school would let me take.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Choose another profession. Really. If you must write, become a novelist, a teacher, a lyricist, write for TV or movies. Forget journalism.

What's your favorite drink?

Coffee. Black. I usually settle for my own (Folgers or Yuban) but I like McDonald's, and maybe do Starbucks once a year.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Men's Health, in my never-ending quest to figure out how other guys are so athletic.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

My beat is usually music, and the most common misperception is that musicians, or music journalists, actually make good money.
