The story behind “Strange Fruit” is unlike any other. Written by a then-unknown teacher-poet-songwriter, its content was so shocking that even the singer – Billie Holiday – did not want to sing it at first. It became one of the first real protest songs, and one of the most important songs and records of all time.

What was your first job as a journalist?

I wrote a newspaper column about music for three years for the Greenville, MI Daily News starting at 17. Some local features as well.

Why did you become a journalist?

I was the editor of my high school paper, and I liked observing things and people, so the two just sort of came together for me.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes, I was the co-editor. I also took every English, rhetoric and composition class the school would let me take.
