Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I was a new media editor for my college newspaper. That was when "new media" was a fluid definition. Writing, video, slideshows and podcasts.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. It's been a while, though.

How is social media changing news?

It drives the news. It's where everyone reads about developments first, and it's a much-needed tool to gain information for journalists.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Henry Hackett (Michael Keating in The Paper), Walter Burns (Walter Matthau in The Front Page), and William Miller (Almost Famous)

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To be a watchdog, to be a voice for those without one - or a muted one - and to ensure justice and liberties are carried out in full.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

#PartyLikeAJournalist is always good for a smile.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Witnessing something firsthand, or in a person-to-person manner.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

A steady keyboard, an iPhone, a camera, social media, notepad and pen, Photoshop, Final Cut, and caffeine.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter.

Who do you wish followed you?

Michael Gordon, Chris Cillizza, Ben Smith, Jon Stewart, Matt Taibbi, politicos, concerned taxpayers, people who like humor

Why did you become a journalist?

To be a voice to the voiceless and ensure justice for those being crushed.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did. I learned that you can't be friends with those in your story. Every deserves equal criticism.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Exposing a police internal investigation; A federal investigation into the local Post Office; connecting political dots to show wastefulness

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Take as many opportunities as you can, from internships to fellowships. If you have to live on a ship, it'll pay off one day.

When's the best time to pitch you?

After a cup of coffee.
