Leinster don't feel it's 'now or never'
Josh van der Flier says Leinster don't believe it’s "now or never" in this generation’s bid to add another Investec Champions Cup title to their name. Speaking on RTÉ Sport’s coverage of Leinster’s last-16 win over Leicester, former Ireland and Leinster number 8 Jamie Heaslip suggested another season without a European Cup wouldn’t be reflective of the team’s quality. "It’s now or never for this group, for Leo [Cullen] and his team," he said (below).
Titanic tussle lies in store at Aviva Stadium
The Champions Cup quarter-finalists were decided after an exciting round of knockout games played out last weekend. While there are some thrilling match-ups with new rivalries, old foes meet in Dublin on Saturday evening. Leinster will look to double down on their group win against La Rochelle by putting an end to the hold that Ronan O'Gara's men have on them in the knockout stages in recent years.
'There has to be a blanket ban on the pyro'
In an ideal world, the aftermath of Friday's clash between Drogheda United and Shelbourne would have focused on an entertaining night on the pitch and a dramatic ending following Sean Boyd's late equaliser for Damien Duff's current SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division leaders.
Preview: Ireland need attacking courage to upset odds
Eileen Gleeson has a tactical Rubik's Cube to solve. Tonight, the Republic of Ireland welcome reigning European champions England to the Aviva Stadium for a blockbuster Euro 2025 qualifier. It's the first time the countries have met in a women's football international since 1987, when a Kerry Davis goal earned the Lionesses a 1-0 win at Dalymount Park. While Ireland fell to a 1-0 defeat against France last Friday night, England toiled to a 1-1 draw against Sweden.
McIlroy looking to end his decade-long quest in Augusta
Despite its best efforts, the Tournament of Champions has failed in its efforts to kickstart the PGA Tour season into life. As much of a thrill as it must be for a first-time winner to take the entire entourage on a January jolly to the idyllic Hawaii islands, some very notable names have failed to RSVP to the exclusive invite.
Wasteful Derry held at home by Dundalk
Derry City dropped two points rather than gaining one as they were unable to see off a well drilled Dundalk, a bitterly cold Brandywell. The Foylesiders had the Oriel Park men on the back foot for the majority of the game and in truth had enough chances to win the game. Ruaidhrí Higgins' men were always on the front foot, with Dundalk keeper Nathan Sheppard having to make a few big saves, but they couldn't find a way through and dropped to second after Bohemians' win at St Pat's.
Terenure thump depleted Buccaneers to lift Bateman Cup
TERENURE COLLEGE 71 BUCCANEERS 13, Lakelands Park Terenure College were crowned Energia Bateman Cup champions for the first time, doing it in clinical fashion with a 71-13 final win over an understrength Buccaneers team at Lakelands Park. Full-back Adam La Grue ran in a hat-trick on a night that 'Nure racked up 11 tries, with Buccaneers' only consolation a 69th-minute converted effort from replacement Robert Teape.
Galway United crush Kerry to stay top
It was a night to forget for new boys Kerry FC as they fell to a crushing 9-1 defeat against Galway United at Eamonn Deacy Park. Trailing 5-0 at the break, it didn't get much better for the Munster side, with Galway adding four more goals after the break. Samuel Aladesanusi did get a consolation for Kerry on 65 minutes but the hosts were 6-0 up at that stage.

Adegboyega on the mark as Drogheda overcome UCD
Emmanuel Adegboyega proved a match winner with his first senior goal as Drogheda United maintained their bright start to the season with victory at the UCD Bowl. The 19-year-old centre-back met Dayle Rooney's 73rd minute free kick to glance a header to the far corner of the net for the only goal of an eventful game. Drogheda move up to fourth in the table on eight points, five more than they had after five games last year, as UCD remain bottom.

Scotland U20 7-82 Ireland U20 Ireland are just one win away from back to back U20 Six Nations Grand Slams, after dominating from start to finish in a 75-point win away to Scotland in Glasgow. Richie Murphy's side looked a league above their hosts, running in 12 tries in total, with three for Munster's Ruadhan Quinn, who was named Player of the Match.
Bohemians rise to the summit as St Pat's woes continue
Bohemians' flying start to the season continued, as goals from Jonathan Afolabi and Dean Williams piled yet more misery onto a struggling St Patrick's Athletic. Declan Devine has quickly transformed this Bohs side into a formidable outfit, and the Gypsies deservedly go into the weekend top of the league after the opening five games. Having watched his side concede seven during losses to Dundalk and Sligo last weekend, St Pat’s manager Tim Clancy sits on the other end of the spectrum.
Hoops still waiting for first win after Shels stalemate
Champions Shamrock Rovers' quest for their first win of 2023 goes on as they were frustrated on a chilly spring evening in Drumcondra. Shels' solid structure is well-known to all and, while they rode their luck here and created next to nothing, they will feel they did enough to earn a point. Rovers will have regrets.
Barca face inquiry over payments to ref administrator
Barcelona and two of the club's former presidents are facing questions over alleged payments to a former vice-president of Spain’s referees’ committee. The focus of the inquiry is reported to be payments of €7.3 million made by the club between 2014 and 2018. A judge must yet decide whether to take up the case. Barcelona have not publicly commented on Friday’s development, but last month denied wrongdoing.
Friday's Airtricity League Premier Division updates
Dundalk boss Stephen O'Donnell has pointed to his side's fine record at the venue as they look to make it nine points in a week. "We're really looking forward to it. The Brandywell is always a good place to go and play. It's a really big pitch so it suits good footballers and there'll be a lot of them on the pitch on Friday." "Derry are unbeaten in their opening four. They'll be riding the crest of a wave at the minute but our confidence is also high after the last two results.
U20 Six Nations: Scotland v Ireland - Updates
TEAM NEWS Ireland head coach Richie Murphy has chosen to rotate things a little ahead of this game, making three changes from the side that saw off Italy in Treviso. Evan O'Connell - nephew of former Ireland captain Paul - comes into the second row, while Fiachra Barrett gets a start at prop. There's one change to the backline, where Andrew Osborne - brother of Leinster's Jamie - comes onto the wing.
Rahm out of Players, Lowry and Power set to miss cut
Jon Rahm has withdrawn from the Players Championship ahead of his second round because of illness. The Spaniard, ranked world number one, had recorded a one-under-par 71 in his first round on Thursday at TPC Sawgrass. He had been due to tee off alongside American Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, who are both in position take over the number one spot with good results this week.
McKibbin remains in contention at the Kenya Open
Tom McKibbin fired a successive round of 69 to leave himself six shots behind leader Nacho Elvira at the halfway point of the Magical Kenya Open. McKibbin had an eventful outward nine, with three bogeys to go along with shots picked up on three and four. An eagle on ten was the start of a more consistent showing heading for home. A birdie at the last saw him finish on four over and in a share of 26th. The other Irish players in the field did not make the cut, which was one under.
Home favourite Un-Nooh to meet Ding in Six Red final
Thepchaiya Un-Nooh rallied from 5-2 and 6-4 down to beat Hossein Vafaei 7-6 and set up a final against Ding Junhui at the Six Red World Championship final in Bangkok. Vafaei, who punished a missed match ball from Judd Trump in Thursday's quarter-final, was guilty of letting victory slip from his fingers as he missed a difficult pink that would have given him a 7-5 win. Un-Nooh made him pay as a number of snookers settled the deciding frame to put the Thai into his third final in eight years.
BBC make Gary Lineker 'step back' from Match of the Day
Gary Lineker will "step back" from presenting Match Of The Day until he and the BBC have reached an "agreed and clear position" on his use of social media. The presenter has been embroiled in a row over impartiality after comparing the language used to launch a new UK Government asylum policy with 1930s Germany. A BBC spokesperson said: "The BBC has been in extensive discussions with Gary and his team in recent days.

Liverpool's forward planning already paying off
Liverpool's forward line is undergoing an evolution but manager Jurgen Klopp believes the club is already reaping the rewards of their longer-term planning made this season. In the week following the 7-0 demolition of Manchester United, principal owner John W Henry spoke of his ongoing commitment to the club and the need to continue to "invest wisely".
Farrell: Always a 'ding-dong' battle against Scots
Andy Farrell straight-batted a question about this version of the Scotland team being the toughest Ireland have faced in recent times, but deep down he'll know it to be true. Buoyed after backing up their success over England with a comprehensive victory over Wales, which meant back-to-back opening wins for the first time in the Six Nations, Gregor Townsend’s side, upon reflection, will still have taken much from the 32-21 loss to France last time out.
