What was your first job as a journalist?

Intern with Reuters

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes! My mom was on typewriting instructor, so I played around with her old manual typewriter which came in a handy blue and white carry case.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

I only have real favorite journalists!

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Listening and empathizing. Having a very good B.S. detector.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Good old-fashioned pen and paper, my mobile phone for recording interviews, my laptop, Google Drive and Word, Excel.

Jean Luc Picard... er, I mean Patrick Stewart.

Why did you become a journalist?

This is the best job for a curious person. Also, I believe that journalism has the capacity to facilitate change.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Nope!

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A few years ago, I fought hard for a story about a landslide in Papua New Guinea where scores of people were killed. http://reut.rs/1RA4tGy

When's the best time to pitch you?

In the morning.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

When I lived in Australia, I loved any story that involved me going to the middle of the Outback.

What's your favorite drink?

Ambo, a sparkling water brand in Ethiopia, where I grew up.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Outside exploring Jamaica or at home spending time with my husband and son.
