"Things get pretty uncanny": Manchester Camerata Presents Twin Peaks at Firth Hall
As they softly break into 'Laura Palmer’s Theme' on stage at Firth Hall, you realise the scale of the task the dozen or so people that make up Manchester Camerata have set themselves. David Lynch and Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks skips grooves from melodrama and soap to horror and science fiction as it follows FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper’s investigation into who or what killed the eponymous town’s beloved prom queen. Its soundtrack is equally expansive.
Linton Kwesi Johnson & Danae Wellington at Off The Shelf 2022
Poetry is alchemy. In the academic setting of Firth Hall, as part of the city’s Off The Shelf Festival of Words, tonight’s support is Danae Wellington, Sheffield’s next Poet Laureate. Wellington’s poetry is magical and real, full of revelation in surprising places. In particular I was sent by the slow measure of coolly repeated line, “A fat black girl walks...”, which achieved a kind of transcendence. Poetry is news.
A new magic: Richard Hawley at Leadmill
From godfathering monkeys and playing in pretty much every one of your favourite bands and pubs in Sheffield, to his insidious naming of albums after city locales (which means I can’t drive to St. James Retail Park without a pavlovian whistle of ‘The Only Road’), Richard Hawley runs through the city like a sixth river. It’d be weird if he wasn’t doing a residency at The Leadmill, basically.
Gilmore Trail - Permanence
Gilmore Trail’s fourth album Permanence is five years in the making, and its elemental mix of EBow guitar, bomb-blast drums and temporal manipulation create a formidable landscape. Navigating the Sheffield four-piece’s sheer cliffs of noise and ten-minute tundras is a Shackleton-like experience, but some of the views take your breath away. This is not an album without challenges. The looping builds and falls can be alternatively root canal shaking and distancing.
The Cult of Water at the Drama Studio
David Bramwell’s show The Cult of Water is a kind of Doncastrian Lord of the Rings, telling the story of the musician and broadcaster’s quest to throw an accursed seventies upbringing into the volcanic source of the River Don. There’s also a wizard, who we’ll get in a tic.
JARV IS… at the Octagon
You imagine there must have been a time, when Jarvis Cocker was treading the boards with Pulp every few weeks in the eighties, that a gig at the University of Sheffield had all the allure of a trip to Morrisons. But exactly 50 years since his last official visit in 1994, there’s a real trepidation for this last date on the JARV IS... tour. It’s a night full of ghosts, chiaroscuro drama, keyboards that will. not. work... And I’ve completely let the folk horror theme unbalance my review.
