What Industry Partners Should Do When the Next Suisun City-Type Attack Hits
On the morning of Aug. 7, malicious software hit Suisun City's IT network at roughly 5:45 a.m., disrupting 911 call routing, police and fire dispatch and city records. The following day, the City Council held a special meeting and voted unanimously to declare a local state of emergency, a move that unlocked emergency procurement authority, mutual aid and faster access to state and federal resources.
How AI Can Unlock the 5 Dimensions of Permitting
Local governments traditionally shine as the great problem-solvers among our institutions. Their proximity to constituents gives them a clear view of emerging problems and allows them to translate community feedback into practical solutions, making cities and counties true laboratories for democracy. That tradition of pragmatic innovation is important in a moment when technology discussions can easily become consumed by hype. AI takes up a lot of oxygen in technology conversations.
San Jose deputy city manager named Seattle's interim tech chief
Rob Lloyd, who has served as deputy city manager for aviation, transportation and technology for the City of San Jose, California, since 2016, was named on Thursday by Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell as Seattle’s interim chief technology officer and director of the city’s Information Technology Department. Harrell selected Lloyd following a national search initiated this spring, which included listening sessions with Seattle’s IT department and other city employees.
Safeguarding, cyber security and IT in early years settings
One of the defining features of the current generation of early years (EY) children is their proficiency with, and use of, technology. This has provided the opportunity for EY educators to incorporate IT into their lessons at much earlier ages, gamifying lessons and supporting the children's wider education. However, use of IT in these settings does raise both safeguarding and cyber security considerations that must be fulfilled both for compliance and for the safety of both children and staff.

Evaluating evaluations: When should philanthropy evaluate (and when shouldn’t it?)
Now more than ever, philanthropy wants to know the impact it is having and is investing in evaluation to understand this. A recent OECD survey of foundations working in international development found that close to 70 per cent now evaluate their work. Surely this must be a good thing?

Before the Challenge even began, we were engaged in projects in Finland, with DP World and the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai, in Russia, and at the Port of L.A. and Long Beach in California.
On the Road: Calgary Cruz N Tour Club
CALGARY — It’s show and shine season, and that means just about every weekend owners of special interest rides are gathering together and parking their vehicles. There’s little doubt Calgary’s Rob Lloyd is a fan of show and shines, but he prefers to experience any of the five collector cars in his stable as the maker intended: out on the road. At one time a member of several different local car clubs, some now defunct, Lloyd was encouraged by friends to start a new group.
Keep Skating to Where the Puck is Going, Not Where it is
As you may have heard by now, I have decided to leave Cisco at the end of July to begin the next chapter in my career. After nearly 21 years of riding this rocket ship called Cisco, my mind is filled with the amazing experiences I have had around the world with colleagues, business partners and customers. Together, we have harnessed the incredible power of the Internet to change the world.
Myth-busting: White-box Switches are No Bargain
In the last episode of our myth-busting series, Cisco SDN expert Frank D’Agostino and I are debunking the myth of the bargain priced white-box switch. White boxes aren’t a new subject in the market, but customers are just now starting to evaluate them for return on investment. So, where to start? When considering a white-box deployment, it is crucial to do all of the math. You must consider both the capital costs and the ongoing operational costs of this type of solution.
Myth-busting: Is Cisco’s Approach to SDN Open?
In our continuing myth-busting series, Cisco SDN expert Frank D’Agostino and I are debunking trendy technology myths around SDN. The more I speak to customers these days, the more I hear them talk about open. Customers want an infrastructure that is programmable and based on open standards. They want rapid feature integration and network automation.
Myth-busting: ACI or NSX, which is the Real SDN Leader?
I speak with customers every day and often hear they are confused by conflicting vendor claims, marketing hype and embellishments. This is especially true when discussing SDN, where both the technology and the market have evolved significantly over the past few years. I’ve invited Frank D’Agostino, one of Cisco’s top technical experts on SDN, to join me in separating fact from fiction.

Mobile Traffic from Wearables Explodes as the Internet of Everything Accelerates
Cisco first asked this question in a 1999 advertising campaign when the incredible potential of the Internet was just beginning to become apparent.
