The Goo Goo Dolls faced financial troubles and a career-threatening case of writer's block in 1996, leading to a legal battle with their label Metal Blade. John Rzeznik overcame his writer's block by writing the career-defining song "Iris" for the City of Angels soundtrack, using an unusual altered tuning and incorporating a melancholic mandolin line.
