GUEST VIEWPOINT: False narratives hurt country
Conservatives today are trying to create their own narrative regarding the occurrence of certain historical events. And they are finally being called for them.Alex Jones, conservative talk show host, has accused parents and the media of making up the story about the Dec. 14, 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.Laura Ingraham, Fox "news" commentator, has accused David Hogg of not being at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., on Feb.
GUEST VIEWPOINT: End the cycle of violence
The issue today, especially after what happened in Parkland on Valentine's Day, is not about controlling the guns. It is about controlling the violence. We are especially horrified (and terrorized) when such acts of violence occur where our children are involved, at a place where their minds should be opened by their thirst for knowledge, not closed by their fear for their lives.
ROBERT HASTINGS COLUMN: What is the real danger to democracy?
By the degree that any man is denied justice and his liberties, by that same degree are we all denied justice and liberty. Whatever we deny to others that is guaranteed them by those documents upon which our nation is founded so do we deny to ourselves, and that which we claim to have is thus diminished accordingly. The very essence of democracy lies in the equality of all before the law, and in the shared responsibility of all for the maintenance of our democracy.
ROBERT HASTINGS COLUMN: Columnist wrong on climate change
President Trump and several of his key cabinet members are vocal deniers of the theory and the science of climate change. In a column by John Stossel appearing in Wednesday's R&L titled "Blame for a Disaster," Mr. Stossel states, "Irma and Harvey came after a record 12 years without any Category 3-5 storms." Based upon this assertion, Mr. Stossel proceeds to castigate Time magazine for blaming powerful storms on climate change that is a result of human use of fossil fuel.
ROBERT HASTINGS COLUMN: How do we respond after tragedy?
Statistics are available from any number of sources as to how many casualties, how many homes without power and for how long, how many babies were born during the incident, how long it took to recover and how much was spent by individuals, the private sector and government to describe the effects of catastrophic events.
GUEST VIEWPOINT: Respect for Trump must be earned
Why did violence erupt in Charlottesville, Virginia on Aug. 12, and what simple consideration could have avoided it? The occasion for violence was the gathering of various white supremacy groups under the aegis of a local permit for such a gathering. This violence is not something that should have been unanticipated, though it would seem local authorities were caught off guard.
ROBERT HASTINGS COLUMN: A meal among friends
When Carolina Bar-B-Q opened its doors, Ronald Reagan was president and Mary and I had moved to Statesville just a year or two earlier.
ROBERT HASTINGS COLUMN: What would they think of today's Republican Party?
My wife's grandfather moved to Statesville from New York in the 1950s and while he was still active penned a column for the Record & Landmark titled "As Seen From Here." He worked in the Roosevelt wartime administration, though he was a Republican. At a time when both parties found it easier to cooperate than to argue, he witnessed many important times in our nation's history, and in Statesville's local history.
ROBERT HASTINGS COLUMN: Law could bring positive change
On May 15, the R&L published an article regarding the support of Rena Turner for HB-280, a bill to raise the age at which juveniles will be tried and punished as adults for non-violent crimes. Many support this bill, including the ACLU, the N.C. Sheriffs' Association, the N.C. Association of Chiefs of Police, and State Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Martin. Our sheriff, Darren Campbell, however, does not.
ROBERT HASTINGS COLUMN: Who is getting the help?
Every Democrat who has occupied the White House since World War II (for that matter, every progressive since Lincoln) has proposed legislation to make life better, more fair, and more just for all Americans, while their conservative counterparts in state and federal offices have either opposed these initiatives or tried to bias them to benefit the few.
