Robert Anton Wilson’s take on everyday hypnosis – that we drift from “direct” experience into what we call the “Real” World, a learned abstraction – emphasises the objectivity we attribute to this Platonically “Real” realm. Thus we filter out what doesn’t conform to the abstraction as “subjective”, “mere appearance”, hallucination, illusion, dream, fiction, error, lies, etc. Animals do something comparable, but only as automatic reaction – from evolutionarily ‘normal’ imprinting, etc.
