'Andrea Dworkin: The Feminist as Revolutionary' Gives the Groundbreaking Feminist Her Due
Andrea Dworkin: The Feminist as Revolutionary is an admiral treatise on Dworkin’s life and work, including unusually rare glimpses of intimate moments.
We don't need and can't afford a large rec center
I'm writing in reference to the article in Wednesday Journal, "Park districts, D200 ramp up community pool talks" [News, Aug. 30]. The Park District of Oak Park (PDOP) has been considering a new recreation center for several years. In April 2017 I found information on PDOP's website about its investigation into this facility going back to 2014.
D97 to host community conversations throughout April
Oak Park District 97 is hosting a series of community conversations throughout the district throughout the month of April. The talks are designed to provide D97 Supt. Carol Kelley with community insight on crafting a vision for the future of the district. The meetings will take place on the following dates: Each meeting will include light refreshments. Some sessions will also offer childcare.
Conference shines light on ADHD, learning disabilities
Karin Grimes is on a mission to start a national movement to help kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other learning disabilities (LD) become successful in college and in life. Several years ago, Grimes, a licensed clinical social worker in Oak Park, founded College Readiness 4 Success with Christine Everett, a Forest Park-based financial planner.
No bars for Oak Park?
As Oak Park has gradually relaxed its liquor laws over recent decades, one place it has not gone was the approval of a straight up tavern. No food, no pretending there was food, just a place to have a drink. Two years ago Village Trustee Peter Barber asked why that was the case and the village government's Liquor Control Review Commission was charged with exploring the issue.
Steven Jackson's clemency hearing probes his past and present
On April 14, convict-turned-community leader Stephen Jackson sat at a table in front of the state's Prisoner Review Board in a nondescript, ninth-floor room inside of the Thompson Center downtown. Jackson was accompanied by dozens of supporters, most of whom sat in cramped desks behind him.

D97's new HQ underwhelms
When is the last time that Oak Park's District 97 elementary schools built a decent-looking building? I'm no architect. But the evidence before us suggests I'm not far off when I pin it at 1924, the year that Lowell School was completed at the corner of Lake and Forest. Of course Lowell was sold off in 1971 and demolished shortly after that, a mere 47 years after its handsome construction.
Oak Park and River Forest police reports April 11-17
Two DHL packages containing curly Brazilian human hair were stolen from the 100 block of Garfield Street, sometime between 10:47 a.m. on April 15 and 11:58 a.m. the next day. The loss was an estimated $150. A 2007 Toyota Corolla was burglarized in the 400 block of South Grove Avenue sometime between 6 p.m. on April 11 and 9:40 a.m. the next day. The offenders entered the vehicle and ransacked the glove box and trunk.
A hall-of-famer in and out of the pool
OPRF swimming pool coach Peter Quinn, who was recently inducted into the IHSA Swimming and Diving Coaches Hall of Fame. He was the only coach in the state to receive the honor this year. | WILLIAM CAMARGO/Staff Photographer One of Jamie Daggett's best memories of Peter Quinn — his old swimming coach who was inducted into the IHSA Swimming and Diving Coaches Hall of Fame last month — has nothing to do with winning.
River Forest to require residency for most commissions
It's a head-scratcher for sure, but members of some River Forest village commissions don't have to be residents of the village. That is about to change. In a series of amendments to the village code, residency will become a requirement of service on the Development Review Board, the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Ethics Commission, joining most other panels that advise River Forest on village-related business.
River Forest Library Board elevates interim director
Sue Quinn hit the ground running when she became interim director of the River Forest Public Library in January. Now as permanent director of the library, she gets to carry out all she's anticipating — and more — to make the library an even more integral part of residents' lives. "We are moving in the right direction. We will continue that font of creativity that we've had in the past … so that [the library] remains a welcoming environment for the entire community," Quinn said.
Alexander Magee, 93
Alexander Magee, 93, died at his Oak Park home on April 11, 2016. Born on Aug. 31, 1922, he served in World War II as First Lieutenant Lead Bombardier in the 8th Air Force at Lavenham, England. He led 29 heavy bombardment formation attacks on Nazi targets in Occupied France and Germany in B24s and B17s and was twice decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal five times.
40 teachers in D97 seek national recognition
Forty Oak Park District 97 teachers have been recruited to participate in a National Board Certification professional development program starting in the 2016-17 school year. The initiative, likely to be approved by the school board at an April 26 meeting, could be a game-changer, top administrators say.
Gerri Brauneis, 85
What qualities anchored Gerri Brauneis to her life and work? What words come to the fore? Certainly love and respect, as well as commitment and stamina. Gerri generously fought, decade after decade, for social justice in so many forms. "Racial justice, gun control, homelessness, torture, economic justice, interfaith relationships were among her many causes," said a spokesperson for the Committee for a Just Peace in Israel and Palestine, another cause she supported.

Passover seders find fertile interfaith grounding
Passover begins this year at sundown on Friday, April 22. Members of the Secular Jewish Community will hold their Seder at 5:30 p.m. on April 23. Nothing unusual about that, since the group's members identify as Jewish in a cultural sense. Unity Temple will hold a Seder the night before, on April 22. Nothing unusual about that, since the Unitarian Universalist congregation borrows meaningful practices from many of the world's religious traditions.
D90 to tackle 'equity' in student achievement
For two years, River Forest Elementary School District 90 has taken some concerted steps toward finding ways of raising the level of academic achievement of all of its students. That effort reached another milestone when the board of education on April 6 gave the administration the go-ahead to bring in the National Equity Project.
Not your average book club
16th Street Theater goes topically comic instead of topically serious in their latest production. | Courtesy 16th Street Theater The latest offering, The Book Club Play, at 16th Street Theater in Berwyn, is not the troupe's typically edgy drama, thrusting the audience into intense, cutting-edge social issues. The current production is an entertaining comedy about the politics and personalities that cause friction within a long-established book club.
