Statistics All statistical analyses were run in R version 4.0.3 (R Core Team, 2020). We used linear mixed effect models (‘lmer’ function, lme4 package (Bates et al., 2015)) with treatment group, bout number, and pre/post-bout (samples taken at the beginning of the bout were pre-bout, samples taken at the end of the bout were post-bout) as fixed effects and bird identity as a random effect (“full model”; Fig. 3). We then ran a Type III ANOVA (‘Anova’ function, car package (Fox & Weisberg, 2011)).
