Coop and I drove down to New Orleans form North Carolina for the PCA trade show and, while on the way, we stopped by The Cigar Shop in Biloxi, MS for a visit. As most of you know, this is my first home shop. My home away from home. During our visit, a particular light caught my eye. In the glass case was a slim lighter with a striking copper and gunmetal color scheme that I thought looked really great.

Rocky Patel Gold Label Toro | Cigar Review
Today, we review the Rocky Patel Gold Label in the Toro size. The Gold Label debuted at the 2024 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show. Two things stood out to me when it came to Gold Label. First is the fact that Rocky Patel is theming several of his releases around a “color” theme, and Gold Label represents that. Second, it is designed to be a more affordable offering with some very nice packaging. Gold Label comes in priced between $9.70 and $14.00.

Rocky Patel Gold Label Toro
With a name like “Gold Label” and a cigar wrapped in gold foil, I’m surprised that this isn’t the $100 cigar from Rocky Patel. So far, Gold Label is the lone new regular production line from Rocky Patel Premium Cigars, Inc. for 2024. Like many other new releases from Rocky Patel, it is made at the company’s Tabacalera Villa Cuba S.A. (TAVICUSA) factory in Estelí, Nicaragua.
Rocky Patel Premium Cigars Announces Price Decrease for DBS | Cigar News
Rocky Patel Premium Cigars has announced a price decrease on its Rocky Patel DBS line. Information of the price decrease has been communicated to retailers. The Robusto and Toro sizes of DBS are being reduced by $3.00 coming in at a new MSRP of $17.00 and $18.00 respectively. The DBS Sixty gets a $4.00 reduction coming in at $19.00.

Today, we review the Rocky Patel Dark Star in the Robusto size. The Dark Star is a new regular production line released by Rocky Patel Premium Cigars at the 2023 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show. Rocky Patel Ships Gold Label and Makes Price Adjustment | Cigar News
Rocky Patel Premium Cigars has announced it is shipping its Gold Label line. The Gold Label was launched at the 2024 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show. Concurrently with shipping, the company has informed its retailers of a price increase for three of the four sizes effective July 29, 2024. The new MSRP pricing is as follows: Robusto ($12.00), Toro ($13.00), and Sixty ($14.00). This is a $1.00 per price increase for each of the vitolas. The Half Corona size remains priced at $9.70.

Today, we review the Rocky Patel Year of the Dragon 2024 edition in the Toro size. If you were looking to celebrate the Chinese New Year with a commemorative cigar, you would have had no problem in 2024 as some two dozen releases hit the market. Over the years, many companies have released Chinese Zodiac cigars, but 2024 marked the first time Rocky Patel Premium Cigars has done so. Rocky Patel released three sizes, each targeting a different market. In the case of the U.S., it was the Toro size.

As part of the 2024 Puro Sabor Festival in Nicaragua, one of the facilities I visited was Tabacalera Villa Cuba S.A. (TAVICUSA) in Estelí, which is home to many of Rocky Patel Premium Cigars’ creations. It had been a while since I’d been to the factory, which always impressed me with how efficiently the space was utilized. To say the company has outgrown it is not just an understatement, it’s something that’s been confirmed.

Rocky Patel Premium Cigars Announces Price Decrease on Three Lines | Cigar News
Rocky Patel Premium Cigars has announced a price decrease on three of its lines. The company says it will decrease the MSRP price of the Rocky Patel Vintage 1990, 1992 & 1999 lines by five percent. The 5% reduction impacts the large format cigars in the three vintage lines. It does not affect the tin offerings. In addition the Vintage 2003, and 2006 lines are not getting a price decrease. Rocky Patel Premium Cigars says the price decrease goes into effect June 1, 2024.
Rocky Patel Gold Label to Debut at 2024 PCA | Cigar News
At the 2024 Premium Cigar Association Trade Show, Rocky Patel Premium Cigars will introduce a new core line, the Rocky Patel Gold Label. Produced at Rocky Patel’s TAVICUSA factory, Gold Label will be highlighted by an Ecuadorian wrapper and feature a double binder of Mexican and Connecticut shade leaves. The filler is all Nicaraguan and consists of tobaccos from the Jalapa and Esteli regions. Presented in 20-count boxes, Gold Label is offered in four sizes: Petite Corona, Robusto, Toro, and Sixty.
Rocky Patel Dark Star Short Star
Late last year, Rocky Patel Premium Cigars, Inc. began shipping a new blend incorporating a type of tobacco the company had never used up to that point. Specifically, the filler of the blend includes a seed from Paraguay that was transplanted to Honduras and grown by the Plasencia family. In addition, the new blend is covered in a corojo-seed wrapper grown in Honduras and a Honduran binder, while the rest of the filler includes tobacco from the Jamastran Valley in Honduras and Jalapa, Nicaragua.
The Smoking Syndicate: Rocky Patel Conviction
Late in 2023, Rocky Patel Cigars released their most extravagant cigar to date, Conviction, which was announced at the 2023 PCA trade show. The Conviction is a two country tobacco blend featuring tobaccos from Mexico and Nicaragua. The Nicaraguan tobacco is from the Rocky Patel farms in Condega and Esteli. The Conviction features a double binder and a special Mexican San Andres wrapper leaf that was ferminated in a special fermentation process called Terciario that is used in Cuba.
Rocky Patel Year of the Dragon 2024 Unveiled | Cigar News
Rocky Patel Premium Cigars has announced it will be doing a Year of the Dragon 2024 cigar. It’s joins companies such as Davidoff, Gurkha, Tabacalera(VegaFina), Oliva, and Maya Selva doing cigars. The U.S. market will see a 6 1/2 x 50 Toro that will make its debut at the 2024 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show in July. In addition, Halfwheel has reported Robusto and Robusto Grande sizes going to the International and Duty Free markets respectively.

While I wouldn’t say the majority of cigar companies fall into this category, there are some companies that have specific sizes that they use for special releases. The most notable example of this to me is the 6 1/2 x 52 toro extra that My Father Cigars, Inc. has used on various limited edition cigars over the year.
Cigar Review: Rocky Patel DBS Toro
Over the years, Rocky Patel Premium Cigars has been known for using Broadleaf wrapper – whether Connecticut Broadleaf or Pennsylvania Broadleaf. Over the past couple of years, there have been shortages of Broadleaf tobacco, typically of the Broadleaf grown in Connecticut. As a result, this has led many cigar factories to seek out alternative tobaccos. At the same time, many farms outside the U.S. have experimented with growing Broadleaf tobacco.

Cigar Review: Rocky Patel The Edge 20th Anniversary Toro
In 2004, Rocky Patel decided to launch a value-priced cigar that wouldn’t have any cigar bands, and would be packaged in 100-count crates. The cigar was dubbed The Edge and it became a huge hit for Patel’s Rocky Patel Premium Cigars company. Today the brand has now extended to eight different lines. The cigars now have footer bands, are available in more traditional size boxes, and come in different wrapper options.

While most of the attention at the Rocky Patel booth at PCA 2023 surrounded the $100.00 Conviction by Rocky Patel cigar release, there was another offering in the value-priced bundle space that was introduced at the Trade Show. It’s a two-cigar blend mixed-filler release known as Seed to Smoke. Seed to Smoke is a mild to medium-bodied offering that delivers cigars in the $2.50 to $3.95 range.

At the 2023 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show, Rocky Patel Premium Cigars showcased a new cigar known as Dark Star. It’s a cigar produced out of Honduras, but it also incorporates filler tobaccos from Paraguay. While the cigars at the Trade Show say “Nicaragua” on the band, the blend is actually a Honduran-forward blend. It uses a Honduran Corojo wrapper over a Honduran binder and a combination of Honduran and Paraguayan tobaccos.

Rocky Patel Premium Cigars is getting ready to launch its signature release of the year, Conviction. It is described as a passionate pet project for company founder and namesake, Rocky Patel. Conviction is described as a small batch, limited edition cigar. It’s only being rolled by four toreadors whom the company says have 130 years of rolling experience between them. The company has capped production at 500 cigars per day.

Rocky Patel The Edge Anniversary 20th Toro
Sometimes cigar companies can get a little bit fuzzy with the anniversary dates of their brands. My favorite is when Drew Estate’s Liga Privada 10 Aniversario came out in 2018, which would have been the 12th year of Liga Privada. The company said that the 2018 date referenced the 10th anniversary of Liga Privada getting expanded to more than one size, which happened in 2008. The numbers checked out but the logic was, umm, over my head.

Cigar Review: Rocky Patel White Label Robusto
At the 2021 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show, Rocky Patel Premium Cigars unveiled a new offering known as the Rocky Patel White Label. It a nutshell, this would be one of the most premium regular production offerings that the company would unveil. This cigar would be priced in the $20.00 range. The Rocky Patel White Label would be a Connecticut Shade offering.

Cigar Review: Rocky Patel Disciple Toro
At the 2021 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show, one of the higher profile releases was the Sixty by Rocky Patel. As the name indicates the cigar commemorated the 60th birthday of company founder Rocky Patel that had been celebrated earlier in the year. The Sixty would feature a Mexican San Andres wrapper on it, a wrapper that has been quite successful both commercially and critically for the company.
Cigar News: Rocky Patel Olde World Reserve Switches to Phillips and King Exclusive
Philips and King has announced it has become the exclusive distributor for the Rocky Patel Olde World Reserve Corojo and Maduro lines. The move was made effective last month. The Olde World Reserve line was first introduced by Rocky Patel Premium Cigars in 2006. National distribution was discontinued in 2012 when the Costa Rican Maduro wrapper used on the Olde World Reserve Maduro became too scarce to obtain. From 2012 to 2016, the Olde World Reserve became an exclusive offering to Thompson Cigar.

Hamlet Paredes, the famed Cuban cigar roller who joined Rocky Patel Premium Cigars in 2015 has departed the company. In addition to being a cigar roller in Cuba working at the Partagas and Romeo y Julieta factories, Paredes has served as a brand ambassador for Habanos SA. He was hired by Rocky Patel Premium Cigar rollers in 2015.

Few companies approach new products launched at the annual PCA Convention & Trade Show with as predictable of a manner as Rocky Patel Premium Cigars, Inc. Nearly without fail, the company’s new offerings are: three new lines, less than a handful of new sizes for existing lines, and new accessories. While the latter parts change slightly year-to-year, the three new lines per trade show has been remarkably consistent.

Here’s the obligatory opening line about a new cigar that is being released for a special occasion. You’ve read it before and I’ve written it before, both likely more times than we care to recall. The occasion is the 60th birthday of none other than one of the biggest personalities in the premium cigar industry, Rocky Patel. On Feb. 26, 2021, the man behind the brand turned 60, and as is only fitting, his company has released a cigar in celebration of the event.
