Betting the House, Mortgaging the Yard
There’s been a lot of talk in sportbiz on the business of horse racing. Good talk, specially Charlie Stebbings Charlie Methven But I need to say of all of it, this piece is the one that catches my attention. The debt play and our Alice in Wonderland capital markets. Well done MoLicker
Statement from the National Medical Association on the U.S. Supreme Court Decision Weakening Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act
By Dr. Roger A. Mitchell, Jr. 126th President, National Medical Association The National Medical Association (NMA) is deeply concerned by yesterday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision to significantly weaken Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, a cornerstone of civil rights protections that has long safeguarded equitable representation in our democracy.
Eurosport Italia on Instagram: "Hai preso il volo, Lisa. Come una fenice 🐦🔥 ❤️🩹 #MilanoCortina2026 #Olimpiadi #Olympics" | Roger Mitchell
We all see the Olympics from the perspective of the nation from which one reside. So with that caveat I’d like to say this. This gathering in 2026 is about the glory of woman, and female sport. What various Italian women have shown is simply extraordinary. Lollobrigida, Brignone, this girl below. Constantini. So many. Look, woman is the superior machine in life. They are asked to be so much more than men. And are conceded a much narrower lane of acceptable behaviour.

Not in my name.
The Albachiara Journal is an eclectic collection of our opinion and perspective, from our travels and encounters. We live in a polarising world where the centre is collapsing all around us, and the middle ground in anything is now rare. We are all being forced everyday to take a side, and then hold it fiercely. Aggressively. I do a podcast with a buddy, entirely based instead on two diverse characters who see sport very differently, and maybe never find resolution in any debate.
Why the Broccolis Gave Up Bond
Roger Mitchell Founder at Albachiara SAGL 37m Edited Report this post “When the history of Hollywood is ultimately written, the tech takeover will be described in broad terms, like: When the internet disrupted a century-old oligopoly of film and television distributors, large digital platforms ultimately undermined and remade the creative industries in their own image.
Roger Mitchell on LinkedIn: ESPN & MLB Play Hardball
Roger Mitchell Founder at Albachiara SAGL 21m Edited Report this post I was on a call this week on a #sport project. I’ve got three live so guessing won’t work. 🤓. It was a discussion about the 5 year Plan forecasts for #media #rights values. Other senior people in the meeting (you know the types who sit on Boards of loads of sports properties and financial institutions) piped up to suggest that our media line should be low. (It already was).
Rounders: Pocket pair of Kings
Roger Mitchell Founder at Albachiara SAGL 50m Report this post “The size of your stack is more important than the quality of your cards. All you have to do is lean on the other guy till he falls over” There is a zillion #negotiation courses out there. All great I’m sure. Politics aside, with the Donald these days we are seeing the theory in action, and it’s very useful education. We should take note. Watch the clip. The size of the stack is being used to lean on the opponents.
Roger Mitchell on LinkedIn: Who is going to be Sport's LVMH?
Roger Mitchell Founder at Albachiara SAGL 26m Report this post Money Demographics and Geopolitics. Regardless of your politics, we all need to realise that our world has changed this week. It is an astonishing change of vibe. What used to be called the “animal spirits” have again been given the green light by Trump, and I can feel it in the conversations I’m having. It’s tangible. People are looking at DEALS. Buying and selling companies, integrating them.
The movements in yield have always fascinated me. In fact, there is a…

The Albachiara Journal is an eclectic collection of our opinion and perspective, from our travels and encounters. The best and most popular historical fiction in the last 50 years, if you exclude wizards and dragons, has always been around mafia. “Godfather“, “Casino“, “Goodfellas“, “Peaky Blinders“ and of course “The Sopranos“. So, one is always going to be attracted to this article.
'Zardoz Speaks To You! How a Classic Movie was Created, Died, and was Born Again' (review)
Written by Roger Mitchell Foreword by John Boorman Published by BearManor Media Apparently Zardoz, the surreal and almost psychedelic 1974 Irish-American science fiction co-production starring Sean Connery and directed by John Boorman (Deliverance, Excalibur), has become a bit of a cult movie. Had I given it much thought in the half century since I saw it at the theater (twice!), this would not have surprised me.

The IMG you knew no longer exists.
This would merit a full Column but it’s August. Celtic Football Club has just issued a very bullish statement to the City. Its share price is also flying. Up 50% in 6 months. In these markets that’s very impressive. It’s valued publicly at £180m on low turnover and profit multiples. 7.6 PE ratio. Unlike almost any other club, it’s sitting on a wad of cash. So much so that fans are very very unhappy.

Sport’s Perfect Storm
Fellow Albachiara’s Sunday Column subscribers, It is with great pleasure and pride that we announce the publishing of Roger Paul Mitchell’s book “Sport’s Perfect Storm”. As the title suggests, this literary work revolves around the causes of the hurricane headwinds faced by the sport’s industry and humbly suggests options to navigate the rough seas.
This is the End, Beautiful Friend.
The Albachiara Journal is an eclectic collection of our opinion and perspective, from our travels and encounters. One of my friends sent me the rushes for a BBC documentary he is producing on Jim Morrison of The Doors.
Australian-rules football gaining popularity locally
Sacramento’s probable largest assembly of Australians in one place gathered at Henry’s Bar & Lounge on O Street. On Sept. 29 Henry’s played host to a watch party for the Grand Finals of the Australian Football League.
Death in Custody: How America Ignores the Truth and What We Can Do about It (Hardcover)
List Price: $28.95 Our Price: $26.06 (Save: $2.90 10%) Description The United States significantly undercounts the number of people who die in law enforcement custody each year. How can we fix this? Deaths resulting from interactions with the US criminal legal system are a public health emergency, but the scope of this issue is intentionally ignored by the very systems that are supposed to be tracking these fatalities.
The corporate jester - Albachiara
Wrote this nearly 5 years ago and it's held up well. The Jester is a close cousin of the 10th man. The contrarian. The person who dares to put different visions on the table. They are worth a salary. People following groupthink perhaps are not. #AI is here. Have a read and give your thoughts. The 10th man is my favourite concept in business. I think he/she will always have a place. #business #people The corporate jester - Albachiara
#podcast #change #money
It's always great to see this stuff. thanks Conor. Raffaella Cardarelli MBA James Gibb Giles Morgan, Grant Williams and I are all very proud of AYNE - are you not entertained? podcast and the editorial line we have held since the start. That line was: change is coming, you can't buck the market, Money, Demographics and Geopolitics. We are gonna have a wee break now over the Summer. We are all pretty busy personally, and, tbh, prediction has become reality.
Roger Mitchell on LinkedIn: Interview to Berlusconi and Milan AC's team - Milanello, 1992 - Final Cut
This is from 1992 from a long weekend I spent with AC Milan with Raffaella Cardarelli MBA It's All or Nothing style at one of the greatest clubs that was ever assembled. We at Sky Sport had the rights to #SerieA when it was the elite football league in the world. And Silvio was Silvio. We lost the rights to Channel 4, and they kicked on the year after with what became a top sports property in the UK.
#podcast #sportindustry #sport
Tomorrow morning at 1000 CET, the AYNE - are you not entertained? podcast has a live show about the PGA TOUR LIV Golf merger. But it's about more than that isn't it? We started the #podcast about 4 years ago for a #sportindustry that looked very different to what it does today. We had hoped to discuss what we thought was going to happen. And I think we did that adequately well. The #sport industry is in the Perfect Storm. Join us for that chat tomorrow morning.
AYNE Episode 1, Season 6 - The Groundsmen meet George Pyne
For the start of AYNE's 6th (!) Season, the Groundsmen welcome George Pyne, founder of Bruin Capital and one the most influential investors in the global sports industry. We asked George to return as our special guest to give his perspective on where he thinks the business of sport is heading.
AYNE Episode 1, Season 6 - The Groundsmen meet George Pyne
Raffaella Cardarelli MBA Thanks George Pyne. These are turbulent times for this industry. Some major black swans and volatility. I personally feel that there are a lot of relative newcomers with capital, investing in the asset class, with financial engineering. They don't "feel" sport, and I sense this is going to end badly, when they need to mark-to-market sooner or later. That's why you need to keep writing your column and doing podcasts, like us.
Silence of the Lambs
The Albachiara Journal is an eclectic collection of our opinion and perspective, from our travels and encounters. We are told that sport is a business of intangibles. Well, when you insist on calling sports clubs and teams as brands, be careful what you wish for! Brands are fragile. I once saw a shop in London called Johnny Lambs. I laughed. Only people knowing the history of Italy would! Johnny Lambs translates as Gianni Agnelli, the patriarchal emblem, and indeed brand, of 20th century Italy.
Why the Global Fragility Act Matters for Haiti
Authors: Roger Mitchell and Lauren Mooney Last month marked the one-year anniversary of the assassination of Haiti’s president, Jovenel Moïse. The commemoration came at a pivotal time for Haiti, which has struggled under the weight of multiple crises—political, security, economic—for years.
Moving forward: business model solutions for amateur sport clubs
ABSTRACT Rationale/Purpose: The survival of New Zealand’s amateur sport clubs is threatened by a range of factors. This study investigated how club partnerships may address sustainability concerns brought about through sport environmental changes. Design/Methodology/Approach: Semi-structured interviews with representatives from five sport clubs explored how partnerships could alter sport clubs’ business models for long-term viability.
SUID investigation protocols inconsistent throughout US
Despite CDC guidelines for the investigation of sudden infant deaths, investigation and autopsy protocols varied widely among medical examiner and coroner jurisdictions within the United States, according to an article published in Pediatric Annals. “The legal requirement to investigate an infant death may not be specifically referenced in all states’ statutes, but an infant who dies suddenly with no readily recognizable disease must be investigated by the medical examiner or coroner,” Roger A.
Where Scottish football went wrong and where it can go right again
EBTs, broadcast models, revisiting SPL TV, environment change, newco/oldco, strip the titles, or the most important question, why can’t we win football games against teams from Luxembourg? I’ve personally opined on most of these in that 140 character kind of sloganeering we all call personal branding. I’m pretty sure most people know my opinion on all of the above by now.
