Zoo Miami black bears receive wellness exams Original

One of the zoo’s black bears undergoes a wellness exam. “Laurel” and “Libby” are 16-year-old American black bear sisters that arrived at Zoo Miami in 2013 and reside in the Florida: Mission Everglades exhibit. Laurel weighs approximately 272 pounds and Libby is a bit lighter at approximately 257 pounds. Recently, they were anesthetized and brought to the zoo’s animal hospital so that they could receive their wellness exams.

A Caribbean flamingo hatched at Zoo Miami

In addition to regular feedings, the flamingo chick participates in daily walks to encourage proper physical development. A Caribbean flamingo hatched at Zoo Miami on Saturday, June 6. The sex of the hatchling is still unknown. The egg was artificially incubated to avoid the risk of loss to environmental conditions such as predation or extreme weather. The incubation period was 28 days. The parents are a 22-year old female and a 10-year-old male.

Zoo Miami Tapir receives CT scans

Tengi undergoes multiple CT scans. For the past several months, “Tengi,” a nearly 10-year-old female endangered Malayan tapir had been experiencing fluctuations in appetite, weight, and activity levels. In an effort to determine the cause, Zoo Miami’s Animal Health Department recently conducted a comprehensive series of diagnostic tests, including blood and urine analysis, ultrasounds, an endoscopy, radiographs, and dental examinations.
