Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
I wrote for the Village Voice, an alternative weekly in NYC. My first book review was anthologized and I thought, "Yep, I can do this"!
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes I've used a typewriter! My father had a manual and an electric, and the tap-tap-tap always reminded me of him.
How is social media changing news?
In a good sense, it gives more people access more quickly. In a less good sense, it makes it easier to manipulate and warp the truth.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To my mind, it means telling the truth. Being fair and balanced. Seeing things with my own eyes, assessing the value and reporting the truth.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I prefer to be pitched via email. Even though my inbox is a deep ocean, if I am interested and/or need more details, I'll reach out.
What's your favorite social network?
I am very visual, so I love Instagram.
Why did you become a journalist?
I am inquisitive, and I needed an excuse to ask intrusive questions. Now I have one. Plus, I love to write.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
The landscape is rough, but the world needs journalists of all types now more than ever. If you feel the passion, stay with it.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
When I was Editorial Director of Organic Spa Media, an unnamed someone sent this pitch, "I'd like to write a feature about a spa."
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Walking, hiking, climbing outdoors. Interviewing someone. Cooking with friends or family. Tending my organic garden. Nose deep in a book.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
There are too many. Luckily, I am a very fast reader.
