I knew I wanted to become a writer ever since I read Harriet the Spy when I was seven years old. What was your first job as a journalist?

I wrote for the Village Voice, an alternative weekly in NYC. My first book review was anthologized and I thought, "Yep, I can do this"!

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes I've used a typewriter! My father had a manual and an electric, and the tap-tap-tap always reminded me of him.

How is social media changing news?

In a good sense, it gives more people access more quickly. In a less good sense, it makes it easier to manipulate and warp the truth.
