Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Special Correspondent in Kolkata.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes! I loved it.

How is social media changing news?

In good ways and bad. The citizen journalist can get to places and events faster than journalists. But there's so much misinformation.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Lois Lane.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Working hard to be an objective writer, but telling the truth as you see it.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Can't think of something funny, unfortunately.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Thoughtfully. Know what I write and edit before pitching me.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Ahrefs, Moz, Critical Mention, Slack, Teams, Zoom.

What's your favorite social network?

Slack. I know it's a communication tool but I've found it a great way to build a community.

Who do you wish followed you?

Anybody from the Economist or The Atlantic would be exciting.

Why did you become a journalist?

I love interviewing people. I love being in the thick of the action. And I love writing.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Sadly no. I never got into the editorial team though I tried very hard to.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The X-Men activation zone at Toronto Comicon 2024. Lot's of queuing but great story to write.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Take as many opportunities as you can to interview people and get accredited. And always ask for help!

When's the best time to pitch you?

9am-5pm ET, Monday-Friday

What's the best pitch you ever got?

I recently got a pitch on Spider-Man 2 that was very well-researched and had a great outline.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

It was about cannabis, a beat I have never covered.

What's your favorite drink?

Water.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

I'm always at my computer.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Walrus. The Economist. Slate. NPR.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That entertainment is easy to write about! It's not. Entertainment writing takes research, time, and creativity.
