Take the Time for Employee Safety
If you ask employees if safety training is important, you’ll probably get different answers depending on that employee’s mindset about workplace safety. For many it is considered a waste of valuable time. Time better spent getting the job done instead of sitting in a classroom. For others, safety training is important for maintaining licenses and, in some work atmospheres, vital for promotions and raises. Still, for some it is a valuable part of working safely on the job and even off the job.

This example highlights the real dangers of working alone in our industry. It also underscores the critical importance of having a plan for when employees are expected to work alone, whether it’s in the field or at a plant. Defensive Driving Tips to Reduce Workplace Vehicle Hazards
These days there are more hazards in the workplace than ever before. One that doesn’t get a lot of attention is driving hazards. There are more vehicles on the road today than ever before, our roadways are often in disrepair and then there are always bad drivers to deal with. The company I work for has over 100 vehicles in our fleet and most of our incidents involve other drivers hitting our vehicles. Many times, while the vehicle is stopped at a red light.

Safety Tips to Protect Workers in Extreme Heat
Extreme heat is the No. 1 cause of weather-related fatalities in the United States, killing around 2,000 people each year. That number is greater than the total from natural disasters like hurricanes, tornados and floods combined. Climate change has caused temperatures to rise each year, making each year more of a threat than ever before. Heat related deaths have surged more than 50% over the last two decades.
Good Observation Skills Paramount for Keeping Job Sites Safe
In our industry there are many hazards employees face every day. Some of these are obvious, like working in confined spaces or when digging trenches. Yet, many not-so-obvious hazards spring up on us suddenly. One of our greatest assets when it comes to identifying hazards is our observation skills. What we see and then process is key to not only identifying these hazards, but also how well we adjust our mindset in dealing with hazards and understanding the dangers if we do nothing.

The High Cost of Ignoring Hazardous Energy
OSHA estimates that nearly 3 million workers in various fields are exposed to the dangers of hazardous energy on a regular basis. There is no real way of knowing exactly how many workers are truly exposed, but it is an easy assumption to think it is much more than 3 million. Common energy sources that employees are required to control are electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal, machinery with moving parts, tensioned springs and gravity.
Be Leery of Gas Lines When Digging
In the water and wastewater industry, workers face many hazards regularly. For those literally in the trenches, excavating has its own set of hazards like cave-ins, equipment rollovers, traffic control and falls into the excavation, to name a few. One hazard that can sometimes get overlooked is the presence of gas lines. First and foremost, calling 811 before you dig is a must. Once the gas line is properly marked, the workers digging should respect the tolerance zones.
