On the first Tuesday in August, hundreds of Oakland neighborhoods temporarily close their streets to traffic for National Night Out. The annual block parties give neighbors a chance to gather over food and drinks while connecting with city leaders, police officers, and firefighters. This year, Oakland registered 175 block parties. ICE used Eastmont Mall parking lot to transfer a detainee, say advocates

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers may be using the Eastmont Mall parking lot in Oakland to transfer detainees, according to immigrant rights advocates. The Alameda County Immigration Legal and Education Partnership, or ACILEP, said in an Instagram post on July 30 that a person detained by ICE in June reported being taken to the Eastmont Mall’s Parking Lot C before they were transported to the agency’s processing center in San Francisco.
