The other day a few of us gathered at my dear friend Joe Posnanski’s house to help him finish a construction project. The project was his latest book, WHY WE LOVE BASEBALL, which comes out in September. If you also love baseball, if you don’t love baseball but might be persuaded, or if you’ve ever seen a baseball, you should buy it. I think that covers everybody. Joe had promised to get a completed draft of the book to the publisher by Monday, and like most writers, he was racing to meet deadline.

Ethel Rosenberg was 37 and the mother of two small sons when she was executed in New York in 1953. Her husband, Julius, had been executed a short time before her. They were both found guilty of the crimes of espionage on behalf of the Soviet Union. Much has been written of Julius Rosenberg, but little about his doomed wife. She had the unhappy distinction of being the first woman in the US to be executed for a crime other than murder.

Winter Garden (Neruda) Winter, and slow leaves clothed in silence and yellow give resplendent dictation. I’m a book of snow, an open hand, a wide meadow, a hopeful horizon; I belong to the earth and its winter. The murmur of the world rose in the branches. The months went by, the fugitive sky was a bowl of summer and the driving cloud dispersed.
