INTRODUCTION Coastal marine habitats require freshwater inputs to maintain their unique and diverse habitats (Pritchard 1967). Unfortunately, many of these habitats have been degraded, filled, or destroyed in various parts of the world (Zedler et al. 2001), leading to decreased freshwater flow, altered nutrient cycling, habitat loss, and reductions in estuarine-associated populations (Kennish 2002; Russell et al. 2006).
