Last November, my campus, the University of Southern California, held its first AI Summit, during which it announced a significant new partnership with OpenAI that included free ChatGPT access for every USC student, faculty and staff member. In the same year, USC laid off more than 900 people, including me—I held an administrative role in a research center at the time, in addition to my tenured faculty role. And our largest college lost nearly all of its academic advisers.

ABSTRACT Youth with juvenile arrest records face significant barriers to higher education, yet their experiences remain underexamined in college access research. Guided by Sampson and Laub’s life course theory of cumulative disadvantage and Perna’s model of college choice, this study investigates how juvenile arrests affect immediate enrollment in 2-year and 4-year colleges among Black, Latine, and white youth.
