In the 1980s and early 1990s organisations like Gay Men’s Health Crisis, ACT-UP and later the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) in South Africa pioneered ‘treatment literacy’ as one strategy to empower vulnerable communities in the response to HIV/AIDS. The premise of treatment literacy is that people are better equipped to respond to disease threats, if they understand the science of the disease they are confronting. The same will be true of COVID-19.
The cost of Covid-19 quarantine
The Eastern Cape public works department faces a bill of R1.56m for quarantining people, with a large chunk used to house and feed those entering the province from the Western Cape — but not everyone is playing ball, with some using it as a chance to live it up at the beach. The quarantine figure comes just seven weeks since the first reported case of Covid-19 in the Eastern Cape and is likely to increase dramatically as the virus spreads.

It also sheds light on inefficiencies and constraints emanating from existing mental health investments in SA.

Parties have nothing to offer, except attacking the ANC
When considering the abundance of choices represented on our ballot paper, it is often said that we have a healthy democracy. The governing party and its legacy is increasingly more contested and opposition parties have displayed vehement resistance to its dominance and what has manifested as arrogance over the years. Although robust debate and contestation of power is healthy in any democratic society, we have seen something shift over the past 25 years of ANC rule.
