Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Working a s summer intern for the Powell Tribune in Wyoming during college. It's the reason I now live in Cody, Wyoming.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, but I'm glad they're obsolete.
How is social media changing news?
Enragement is engagement and click-bait brings the bucks. It's great to have feedback and share, but the algorithms are toxic.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
As a young kid, I read a lot of comic books because I outgrew my kindergarten primers. Clark Kent and Peter Parker were/are my heroes.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means working hard to tell compelling stories that reveal the truth about real people, wherever that leads, fairly and accurately.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Nothing fancy. Mainly just a laptop and iPhone for photos and recording interviews.
Who do you wish followed you?
I wish Anthony Bourdain were still alive and followed my work.
Why did you become a journalist?
Because I always wanted to be a writer and couldn't see myself making a living as a novelist, poet or playwright.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was the editor of my high school paper.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
As an investigative reporter, I wrote stories requiring compromised public officials to resign and fraudulent ventures to shut down.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
If you can't find anyone who wants to publish your work, start your own website and publish it yourself.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Mid-day on a Wednesday.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
I'm not allowed to take free press trips for travel writing, so the worst pitches are free trips to exotic locales I really want to visit.
What's your favorite drink?
Bourbon.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
On a trail or in the woods near my home in Cody, Wyoming or exploring a national park or state park somewhere else.
