David Lammy’s proposed cohabitation law would be bad for couples – and worse for some women

One he may be less aware of is a ticking political timebomb launched by David Lammy in his role as justice secretary, which could affect millions of people who have chosen not to marry.

The Church of England has an Israel problem
In early September, Church House Westminster – the headquarters of the Church of England – hosted Jeremy Corbyn’s Gaza Tribunal (with its foregone conclusions of “complicity” and “genocide”) – arguably a violation of the Church’s ethical lettings policy against racial prejudice. The Tribunal included Francesca Albanese, who for a decade has resorted to antisemitic slurs, including minimising the slaughter of 7 October. A complaint from lawyers about the letting received no reply.
Britain must not recognise Palestinian statehood
A seismic shift in the UK’s foreign policy could dramatically emerge over the coming weeks as the Government considers whether to recognise a Palestinian state. Faced with such a landmark decision, we must all hope that the Government is thoroughly stress testing the law of unintended consequences. The Mayor of London certainly hasn’t, given his spectacularly one-sided and performative intervention which failed to even mention Hamas.
Baroness Mary Warnock's life, work and legacy
Baroness Mary Warnock, whom I became acquainted with in her later years when we overlapped in the House of Lords, was not a very pleasant woman. This may have been because, for a woman to succeed in the important fields in which she moved, toughness and imperviousness to slights were a prerequisite, traits which in a man would be called decisiveness and firmness. Her autobiography struck me in two odd ways. One was the utter assurance that permeated it.
We need better Holocaust education, not a new Westminster memorial

Israeli PM Netanyahu has announced a plan to annex parts of the West Bank on July 1 as fulfilment of a section of the Trump Middle East peace plan.
Empire loyalist | Lawrence James | Standpoint
John Buchan’s labours not only served the public good: they provided the raw material and characters for his thrillers John Buchan: Imaginative and enlightened imperialist It was hard to dislike John Buchan. His generosity of spirit, sharp intelligence, effervescent conversation and ability to listen sympathetically won him friends and admirers. They included George V, Stanley Baldwin and humbler people among whom he moved with approachable ease and courteous familiarity.
From old bore to sex god
Socrates, as every schoolboy knows, is not just a philosopher but the philosopher, Western thought’s great founding father, and the original Greek supergeek. As the early 20th-century academic Alfred North Whitehead declared: “The safest general characterisation of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of footnotes to Plato.” Plato, meanwhile, styled himself as the supplier of footnotes to Socrates.
The oldest hatred lives on
The proposed new London Holocaust memorial: Is it worth the money? (©DAVID ADJAYE ARCHITECTS) Deborah Lipstadt is to combating anti-Semitism as Malala Yousafzai is to fighting for education. Dedicated to fairness and truth, with astonishing resilience and at some cost to themselves, their names resonate around the world. So a new book by Professor Lipstadt, Antisemitism Here and Now, could not be more accurately titled, timely or impactful.
Why the Labour Party won't confront British Muslim anti-Semitism
Too many Labour politicians cravenly adopted the anti-Semitic tropes and anti-Israel demonization they think will get them British Muslim votes, rather than standing up to the prejudice that exists in the community.
