DfE to look at effects of primary pupils’ use of smartphones

A major new government-funded study will probe the impact of delaying giving smartphones to primary school pupils. The Department for Education will work with IFF Research on a £2 million randomised control trial to look at the impact of not giving a phone to state primary pupils at any time, including during holidays. According to Ofcom, 19 per cent of 3 to 5-year-olds own a mobile phone, which rises to 82 per cent of 10 to 12-year-olds.

GCSE results 2026: Which subjects had the most top grades?

Top GCSE grades in Spanish, maths and religious studies have shot up this year, while both English literature and language saw a drop in grade 7 and above. Spanish saw the largest increase in top grades – with a 6.9 per cent rise in grade 7 and above awarded between 2025 and 2026. This was the first cohort to sit the new language specifications introduced in 2024.

Call for clearer Prevent guidance as majority of school referrals sent back

Schools need updated training on which pupils should be referred to the government’s counter-terrorism scheme, the children’s commissioner has said, after most Prevent referrals were sent back without further action. Children’s commissioner Rachel de Souza has also called for new statutory guidance on how to respond to children who pose a risk to others. The number of children referred to Prevent in England and Wales increased from 2,918 in 2016-17 to 4,715 in 2024-25.
