Almost one in four secondary teachers say a pupil at their school has created an AI-generated sexual image of a classmate, a survey suggests. From September, new keeping children safe in education guidance says schools must treat incidents involving AI-generated sexual images of children as a safeguarding incident. It brings such sexual “deepfakes” in line with the rules for real photographs.

Vulnerable pupils locked away and left ‘effectively invisible’, safeguarding review finds

Schools in a London borough will be ordered to assess all safeguarding practices after a review into a special school’s seclusion policies made vulnerable pupils “effectively invisible”. Whitefield School in Waltham Forest was found to have used “excessive and inappropriate physical restraint” and “prolonged periods of seclusion” on 38 pupils with complex learning needs between 2014 and 2017 by a local child safeguarding practice review released this week.

Suspensions and exclusions fall, but sanctions for racist abuse and sexual misconduct rise

The rate at which pupils are suspended and excluded from school has fallen year-on-year for the first time since the Covid pandemic. But despite the picture improving overall, schools have recorded more suspensions for racist abuse and sexual misconduct. Annual data today shows the suspension rate fell to 10.88 in the 2024-25 academic year, a decrease from 11.31 in 2023-24.
