Guns & God | Back Talk | Indy Week
Responding to our cover story on the massacre in Orlando and our call for more robust gun control, Ray Ubinger of the Libertarian Party of Durham writes: "Governments murdered 262 million people last century. That equals 146 Orlando nightclub massacres every single day of the 1900s. So yeah, let's have them decide who can and can't buy a gun. Concentrated political power in the most dangerous thing in the world. Several times deadlier than even war." Ronald C.

The Great American Bar Crawl? Latte Art? The Triangle's Best Food Events
In the frequently asked questions compendium for The Great American Bar Crawl, which comes to downtown Raleigh Saturday, July 2, concerned citizens ask if the Independence Day-linked event is political. "Hell no," the organization responds. "The only party we subscribe to is ... partying." Hey, at least in this politically charged moment, you know where they stand.
Don't Lose Hope | Letters to the Editor | Indy Week
Last week's story on the Orlando massacre prompted the predictable array of pro-gun and anti-Muslim comments. For example, Jm La: "Your quote—'State law permits you to carry weapons in bars'—is technically true, since there are no 'bars' in North Carolina. However, there are restaurants that serve alcohol, which is the definition the state recognizes, so if one has a concealed handgun (not weapon) permit ...

Beer on Tour, Sake at An: The Week's Best Food Events
New Belgium may have a new mountain home in Asheville, but the Colorado-based brewery is going to have a big week in the Triangle. The roving circus of Tour de Fat rolls into Durham Saturday, June 25 (see page 29), preceded by a great free rock show at The Pinhook Thursday night (see page 31).
Listening with Brett Harris: The Pop Tunesmith Talks the Beatles, Big Star, and Local Favorites
It's a sleepy night at Brett Harris's home in suburban Durham. The indie-pop songwriter has hardly been here in months. He's been busy traveling, either touring in support of his excellent March album Up in the Air or performing with other projects, including an acclaimed re-creation of Big Star's Third. Somehow, he's squeezed in an Italian vacation and a Myrtle Beach weekend with his wife, Rebecca. He's wiped.

We've Always Known
There's an ultimatum you've got to accept early on when you're growing up queer in the South: Nobody gives a fuck about you. Many people, including some straight and cisgender folks, had that epiphany again Sunday morning, when we woke to the news that forty-nine members of the LGBTQ+ community were dead in Florida, murdered by a man with an assault rifle and, so far, little motive other than the fact they were gay.
Go On, Drink the Water
In last week's Best of the Triangle issue, our writers declared the fiasco surrounding the legislature's decision to use SolarBees to clean up the polluted Jordan Lake—which provides drinking water to three hundred thousand people in Wake and Chatham counties—the Best Boondoggle. Medora Corporation, which manufacturers SolarBees, took issue with that assessment. "Actually, Jordan Lake is in great shape," writes Medora president Joel Bleth.

From the Mouths of Babes
We begin with wisdom from a middle schooler. "My name is Lucy Farrell, and I have lived in North Carolina my whole life. That's thirteen years. I read your article and I have been learning about House Bill 2, and now I am embarrassed that I live in North Carolina. It is ridiculous that this is happening! ... Let's talk about bathrooms. It should be easy to use the bathroom. It is a necessity. Everyone needs to. We all know that.
Rum, Cider, and Deals: The Triangle's Best Food Events
This will be a busy weekend for Mattie Beason, who closed his Durham standby Six Plates earlier this year only to reopen the same space as Black Twig Cider House months later. On Saturday, June 11, Beason will lead the first of three tasting tours through the four major regions of the new restaurant's beverage of choice. The forty-five-minute, twenty-dollar classes include a concluding "txotx"—an amusing custom in which an effervescent shot of cider shoots from a barrel.

Personal Journalist: Exploring the Peculiar Perspective of Prolific Raleigh Singer-Songwriter Al Riggs
We're idling at the end of a cul-de-sac, and we couldn't be more obvious. We're outside of a big house at the end of a little neighborhood in Fuquay-Varina. The three-story brick home with the pond and the dock has been well kept, its paint bright and shrubs trimmed. Two cars are in the drive, and the owners are probably home. From the driver's seat, though, the songwriter Al Riggs stares inscrutably at the suburban palace for several minutes. At last, he speaks.
Turn Farm to Fork into Restaurant Week: The Triangle's Best Food Events
If you can't make Farm to Fork this year, or if it doesn't sate your appetite for sampling area eateries, Triangle Restaurant Week returns for the second of its dual annual spans June 6. Produced by an area marketing agency, Triangle Restaurant Week doesn't necessarily provide an imprimatur of quality, but its open approach to programming does allow for wide variety.

Beware the Militant Queers
We'll begin with this little gem from commenter David Parham about our HB 2 coverage: "Your overflowing disdain of things you either do not really understand, do not respect, or both comes across so loudly and one-sided that we readers have little choice but to take your views with a grain of salt, if not dismiss them altogether. Governor McCrory stands behind some genuine concerns of many reasonable, temperate, and loving people whose values are grounded in common sense and respect.

Barbecue, Shaved Ice, & Eating Athletics: The Triangle's Best Food Events
Farm to Fork, the area's annual, esteemed celebration of both sides of food production, begins a three-day slate of suppers, picnics, and extravagant dinners next week. Consider this a small preview: Lil' Farm owner George O'Neal, one of the most colorful personalities in Triangle farming, will cut old-fashioned shaved ice on the patio of The Durham Hotel and serve it with strawberries grown on his farm.

Moogfest 2016, Day Two: Grimes in a Parking Lot, Grouper in the Wrong Context, and the Blessed Bass of Bicep in The Armory
So far, having to hide my empty backpack in a bush behind The Durham Armory to get in may be my least favorite moment of Moogfest 2016. At the end of day two, this festival has largely exceeded the expectations I set.For starters, the distance between venues hasn’t been the issue people made it out to be.
Live: Savage Weekend VI Disrupts, Sans Tech Money
Today, Moogfest will roar into the Triangle, importing an impressive roster of headliners like Grimes, Gary Numan, and Sunn O))) alongside a load of niche electronic/experimental talent. While I’m chuffed that Moog’s corporate patronage is providing us with these acts, it felt fitting that I didn’t spend the lead-up weekend revising my tech panel schedule.

Music Festivals? No, Food Festivals: The Triangle's Best Food Events This Week
The Durham debut of Moogfest rightfully gets the festival attention this week, but you might want to stop by Durham Central Park Saturday for other indulgences. The second Durham Blues & Brews Festival pairs hot players like Cool John Ferguson with unlimited cold pours from twenty breweries. Profits from the $40 tickets go to local charities. Meanwhile, in Raleigh, Babylon's Samad Hachby helms the second Raleigh Food & Wine Festival.

Reasonable People
There was, to say the least, a lot of HB 2 news this week—and a lot of reader reaction, too. (See our recap in Triangulator). Responding to the Department of Justice's demand that the state not enforce HB 2's bathroom provision, commenter chappa hillian (get it?) writes: "Finally, this law is called out for what it is. McCrory and the legislature now find themselves battling the Justice Department over civil rights.

Vegan BBQ & Scientific Beer: The Week's Best Food Events
Presented by Durham's Parks & Recreation Department, the smart little series Botany Bar Crawl aims to explore the science of sipping craft beverages from the city's new glut of beer makers, cider makers, and distillers. For this ticketed edition on May 15, erudite imbibers head to Fullsteam, the "plow-to-pint" brewery that sourced forty percent of its beer's ingredients last year within a three-hundred-mile radius of its Rigsbee Avenue headquarters.

Stay and Fight | Soft Return | Indy Week
Among the many photographs I've amassed over the years, I obtained a prized picture of the gravestone of David White, my grandfather eight generations removed. He and other family members began arriving in North Carolina around 1750, settling into new and difficult lives as residents of the British royal colony. By 1770, North Carolina had an estimated population of just fewer than 200,000 residents, but the settlers had begun to shift from British citizens to the earliest American citizens.
