Why I'm a journalist

I have a passion for learning people’s stories: the way we do things, individually and as a society; how we share our values and face our challenges; what motivates our interaction with the world.

Who I am

I am a New Jersey native based in Houston, where I have lived since 2003. I am married with an adult daughter and two adult stepsons. I spent most of my life working at administrative jobs. At the age of 40 I decided to drop everything and pursue journalism.

Shawn Ellis Public speaking is not the field Shawn Ellis ever pictured for himself. He moved to Nashville, Tennessee, from his home in rural Missouri when he was 17 to pursue a music career. When he realized that was not the career path for him, he enrolled in college. There, he wrote a paper about “how to help people find more meaning in their work” and the topic sparked his passion.

2021 - Howard S. Dubin Outstanding Pro Member Award

The Award honors Howard Dubin who has shown outstanding membership with his service to the Society. While he contributes great sums of time, energy and money to the national Society, Mr. Dubin continues grassroots service at the chapter level. Only two awards (one from chapters of 75 or more members and one from chapters with fewer than 75 members) may be given annually.
