London-y Films To See In August
School’s out and if you own Londoners of the small, non-adult variety, you have doubtless been doing the cinematic rounds of Minions and Inside Out, while hopefully not stumbling en masse into Ted 2 on the suggestion of a well-meaning but ill-informed grandparent. Should you now be dreaming in 3D saturated colour, may we suggest a child-free respite with one of the following, London-y films gracing the capital’s cinemas throughout August.
Londony Films To Watch In April
Spring has finally sprung, despite the best efforts of Storm Katie to throw a spanner in the works, and London’s parks are full of daffodils. But there's still a nip in the air so it's not quite pub garden time yet. Not to worry — we've a host of golden celluloid to tide you over instead. April brings a mix of feel-good blockbusters, cerebral drama and a strange glut of Parisian action movies. Here's our pick, many with a Londony twist.
London-y Films To Watch In February
The red carpet is being rolled up following the biggest, glitziest and most controversial night of the movie year. Bookies heaved a collective sigh of relief as Spotlight foiled the punters to steal Best Picture. Leo finally got his Lifetime Achievement Award so can relax and rake in the cash with dodgy rom coms, Adam Sandler optional. Chris Rock attempted to tackle the diversity issue head-on but had his thunder stolen by legendary Londoner Ali-G.
London-y Films To Watch In February
February is the highlight of the movie year, being awards season central. The BAFTAs hit the Royal Opera House on 14 February, aka Valentine’s Day, which will reveal a lot about the career vs relationship priorities of the nominees, unless they’re planning to multitask and take their significant others for a quick Masala Zone round the corner after. Then, the big daddy of them all, The Oscars, takes place on 28 February in La La Land.
London-y Films To See In January
With the New Year comes the inevitable resolutions. For 2016, how about making one you might not only keep, but actually enjoy? Repeat after Londonist: “this year I vow to see more at the cinema than just Spectre with mum”. Which will be surprisingly easy because i) there will be no new Bonds in 2016 and ii) each month Londonist brings you a handy round up of the must-see movies, particularly those with a London-y twist (some more tenuous than others, we'll admit).
London-y Films To See In December
Ahh, the Christmas Movie. A chance for the stars to ham it up with bad jumpers and bad scripts and shamelessly milk the audience's festive coffers (we’re looking at you, Vince Vaughn). Should you be planning the now traditional Boxing Day activity of stuffing yourself with leftovers and waddling to a movie theatre there will indeed be such, erm, turkeys on offer. Happily, there will also be a feast of slightly more interesting alternatives, many with a London-y twist. Here’s our pick.
London-y Films To See In October
All you movie lovers out there must be bubbling over with excitement, for October is the highlight of London’s cinematic year — yes, the BFI London Film Festival hits town! For two weeks our cinemas are brim full of the very best new, critically acclaimed films that 2015 has to offer with plenty of stuff connected to the capital.
