Sick of getting sick? The science of freshers’ flu
While not actually a flu, freshers’ flu can still spread (and feel!) like the plague. Characterised by headaches, fevers, coughs and a blocked or runny nose, this bad cold is the dampener of many a student’s first experiences of university and (talking from experience) can turn Freshers’ week into a hallucination-filled hell, even without entering Revs. So, can we do anything to avoid this? First of all, it’s important to consider the scientific basis of the cold.
Helping hedgehogs and beyond
Ah, hedgehogs. A seemingly common fixture in the British backyard, these snuffling spiny critters are seeing declines in their population sizes with common reasons being habitat loss and pesticide use, and are currently on the IUCN Red List for British Mammals as being vulnerable to extinction. Presently, conservation efforts are being conducted to preserve their numbers, one such effort being the Hedgehog Hospital in Shepreth run by the Shepreth Wildlife Conservation Charity (SWCC).
