Article gifting pays itself forward for Hearst Newspapers

In the past couple of years, several newspaper publications with paywalls have given subscribers a new benefit: They allowed them to share articles with friends and family for free. At Hearst Newspapers, we added a second wrinkle: requiring anonymous gift recipients to register an e-mail address to redeem the article view. Our hope was that this would result in a “two-fer,” creating an uplift to both our retention and acquisition efforts.

Artificial intelligence, or AI, has the potential to revolutionize many aspects of our society, but it also has the potential to be harmful. As AI becomes more advanced and widespread, it raises ethical concerns about how it will affect jobs, privacy and inequality. Overall, it is important to carefully consider the potential drawbacks of AI and take steps to mitigate them. Would it surprise you if I said that the above paragraph was written entirely by AI?

The next mountain for accessible local journalism

Sustainability for local news doesn’t just end at the paywall When I spoke with a librarian recently about the remote access we enabled for all their patrons as part of the Google News Initiative-funded Access Project, I felt like we planted a flag at the top of a mountain of our year-long goal and achieved a really sweet milestone: she confirmed that we helped give Wi-Fi hotspot-enabled, paywall-less access to The Mercury News online to a homeless man. Boom. Nailed it. High-five.
