Since Craig Conroy took the helm of the Calgary Flames back in May 2023, the hockey club has very much leaned into their youth movement. Call it a retool or a rebuild or a re-whatever, but the long and the short of it is that the Flames have traded a lot of established NHL players for younger players and draft choices. The Calgary Flames made some franchise history a couple weeks back at the 2026 NHL Draft. When they selected Prince George Cougars defenceman Carson Carels at sixth overall, it represented the highest pick they’ve used on a defenceman in franchise history. It’s also the 13th time the Flames have used a first-round pick to select a blueliner, and the second time they’ve done so in three years.

Way, way back in July 2022, restricted free agent forward Matthew Tkachuk informed the Calgary Flames that he wouldn’t be signing a long-term deal with the Flames. Tkachuk’s decision, undertaken after speaking with other teams after receiving his qualifying offer – a right afforded to him under the collective bargaining agreement – led to a pretty significant trade with the Florida Panthers.
