We must stop gaslighting the British public about crime
Only 6.6 million, of 9.4m crimes experienced by victims each year, are recorded by the police - Dan Kitwood/Getty Images Baby formula kept in locked cabinets. Basic groceries now security tagged. Commuters clutching their phones in their pockets rather than risk them being snatched from their hands. These aren’t the signs of a country gripped by paranoia. They are rational adaptations to a simple fact: everyday crime now goes largely unchecked.
'Defecting to Reform follows the polls. Answering the great questions of our age follows the people' - LabourList
When elected MPs defect to Reform UK, they’re making a political statement. But let’s be clear about what kind: they’re following the polls, not following the people. The latest polling shows Reform at 28-29 per cent – ahead of both major parties. Switching rosettes to chase that number is the easiest possible response to voter disillusionment. But polls measure surface sentiment.
Greenpeace is wrong - we can’t have net zero at any price
Ed Miliband is expected to announce the budget for the upcoming offshore wind auction next week - Ian Forsyth/Getty When Labour was in opposition, and even when they first took office, clean power and cheap power used to mean the same thing. They don’t anymore. We are living through two parallel crises: on cost of living and climate. Ed Miliband deserves praise for his strong commitment to net zero, but government policy must also recognise the impact of high prices.
'Reform will own the week – Labour must own the future' - LabourList
Politics is about momentum, and the polls suggest that’s with Reform. This week, Nigel Farage will stride onto the Reform UK conference stage, flanked by slogans about “fixing Britain” and “halving crime”. Expect more headline-grabbing pledges: 30,000 new police officers, “deport-first” border policies, promises to cut your bills tomorrow. Most won’t add up, but they will sound bold, simple and urgent, and strike an emotional chord.
'Reform is taking on the status quo. Labour must too'
Is Reform taking on Labour or the Tories? Commentators who have been fiercely speculating on this question will hear the answer when Nigel Farage takes to the stage at Reform’s latest regional conference today. The setting – a hotel in Chester – is deliberate, bedding down in Labour’s north-western heartlands. However, Farage’s focus is more fundamental. He will position Reform as the disruptors in British politics, challenging the status quo.
International Investment Summit: 'Investment day to investment government'
The government has inherited economic plans that will starve Britain of the investment it desperately needs. To fix this requires stimulating new sources of capital for investment and making Britain a much easier place to invest in. Both require decisive action. The Investment Summit was a promising start. As the curtain rose, a welcome £50bn commitment from the private sector was unveiled alongside a publicly stated belief from global business leaders that Britain is a country worth investing in.
Labour should back Covid passports: they will save lives and win votes – LabourList
Navigating the pandemic has always been a balance of risk. On one side is the need to curtail cases and reduce hospitalisations; on the other is the heavy toll that blanket restrictions take on livelihoods and the economy. For a party in opposition, it was always going to be difficult to do anything other than support the government as it applied this risk calculus over the last year.
