Ryan Martin is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist who will begin serving as executive editor of the Indianapolis Star in October 2025.
Right now, he is working as the interim managing editor for the nonprofit newsroom Mirror Indy. In addition to editing and reporting investigative projects, Martin manages a team of news reporters, oversees the text alerts strategy and guides the daily publishing plan. He also created In the Mirror, an award-winning morning newsletter that reaches more than 30,000 readers every weekday.
He previously worked at The Indianapolis Star for nearly eight years in a variety of roles, including breaking news editor, criminal justice reporter and investigative reporter.
He was part of a team of journalists from four newsrooms who won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for an investigation that examined K-9 units and the damage inflicted by police dogs.
He also co-authored a series that exposed a death crisis inside Indiana’s county jails, which was recognized with an Investigative Reporters and Editors award, and an investigation examining how lax oversight from state regulators fueled violence inside Indianapolis bars and clubs. The Indiana chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists has honored his journalism as “Story of the Year” three times.
He previously worked as a senior investigative reporter for the digital startup State Affairs Indiana and as managing editor for The Elkhart Truth newspaper in northern Indiana.
Martin earned an associate's degree at John A. Logan Community College in southern Illinois, a bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a master's in business administration from Washington University in St. Louis.
