Tropical forest above‐ground productivity is maintained by nutrients cycled in litter
1 INTRODUCTION Tropical forest productivity represents a major sink for atmospheric CO2 and yet most tropical forests occur on strongly weathered, nutrient-poor soils (Bruijnzeel, 1991; Vitousek & Sanford Jr., 1986). The maintenance of highly productive lowland tropical forests on infertile soils is often attributed to ‘tight’ or ‘efficient’ nutrient cycling via litterfall (Cuevas & Medina, 1988; Vitousek, 1984).
SEX DIFFERENCES IN PULMONARY AND SYSTEMIC VASCULAR FUNCTION AT REST AND DURING EXERCISE IN HEALTHY OLDER ADULTS
Age-related ventricular-vascular stiffening may predispose to the development of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and exertional intolerance. Sex differences observed in diseased states may be rooted in sexual dimorphism observed in health and it has been postulated that such differences may influence susceptibility to disease.

Spleen - The Forgotten Organ at Risk?
S. Gwynne S. Wright F. Apostolopoulos O. Nicholas R. Jennings R. Banner A. Poon King A. Selby Madam — The spleen has not traditionally been considered an organ at risk (OAR) when treating gastro-oesophageal cancers with radiotherapy. However, studies have shown that mean doses to the spleen >10 Gy are associated with increased rates of infection and infection-related mortality, with those receiving doses >40 Gy associated with a substantially higher risk [ 1 Trip A. Carriage and subtypes of foodborne pathogens identified in wild birds residing near agricultural lands in California: a repeated cross-sectional study
Public and Environmental Health Microbiology N. Navarro-Gonzalez, S. Wright, P. Aminabadi, A. Gwinn, T. Suslow, M. Jay-Russell DOI: 10.1128/AEM.01678-19 ABSTRACT Current California agricultural practices strive to co-manage food safety and habitat conservation on farmland. However, the ecology of foodborne pathogens in wild bird populations, especially those avian species residing in proximity to fresh produce production fields, is not fully understood.
SEX DIFFERENCES IN PULMONARY AND SYSTEMIC VASCULAR FUNCTION AT REST AND DURING SUBMAXIMAL EXERCISE IN HEALTHY OLDER ADULTS
Expand allCollapse all Background We studied pulmonary and systemic vascular hemodynamics at rest and during exercise between healthy older men and women. Sex differences may be linked to the female predilection of Heart Failure with preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF), and the observation that vascular compliance is lower in women with this condition.
UNCOUPLING OF PULMONARY PULSE PRESSURE AND PULMONARY ARTERIAL WEDGE PRESSURE DURING EXERCISE IN DYSPNEIC PATIENTS WITH NORMAL RESTING HEMODYNAMICS
Expand allCollapse all Background Hemodynamic response to exercise is used to evaluate causes of dyspnea in suspected pulmonary hypertension (PH) related to pulmonary vascular or left heart disease. Such studies may disclose abnormal increases in mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) in the context of cardiac output, even when hemodynamics in the resting state are within normal limits.

Clinical outcomes among morbidly obese patients hospitalized with diabetic foot complications
The aim of the study is to investigate effects of morbid obesity on patients hospitalized with diabetic foot ulcers and infections (DFU/Is). This retrospective cohort study of hospitalized adults investigated patients with a principal diagnosis of DFU/Is, and compared outcomes based on weight. The primary outcome was lower limb amputations.

FiguresProvocative testing during right heart catheterization (RHC) is gaining increasing acceptance to evaluate cardiac and pulmonary vascular contributions to dyspnea.
“WHY WARM UP?”: EXERCISE ONSET AND THE EARLY PEAK IN PULMONARY ARTERY WEDGE PRESSURE IN HEALTHY OLDER ADULTS
To view the full text, please login as a subscribed user or purchase a subscription. Click here to view the full text on ScienceDirect. FiguresKnowledge gaps exist regarding the pulmonary artery (PA) and pulmonary artery wedge pressure (PAWP) responses to exercise in healthy older adults that may contribute to exertional intolerance.
Original Body of Pain (Documentary)
Original Body of Pain portrays the American opioid epidemic in an immersive, longitudinal fashion, following families stricken by addiction and Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome - when babies are born exposed to substances - for over a year of their lives. Set in Asheville, NC, the documentary follows women through pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond, profiling the highs and lows of motherhood - from first steps and birthday parties, to drug withdrawal, personal traumas, and relapses.

FiguresPatients with advanced heart failure receiving implantable left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) as a bridge to candidacy/transplant or as destination therapy are now living with circulatory support for increasingly longer intervals.

FiguresThe importance of right ventricular (RV) function in both health and disease is increasingly recognized, and the ‘athletic heart’ is of particular interest, in light of recent observations of disproportionate RV remodeling in endurance athletes.

Talking to children about their HIV status: a review of available resources, tools, and models for improving and promoting pediatric disclosure
As children living with HIV (CLHIV) grow into adolescence and adulthood, caregivers and healthcare providers are faced with the sensitive challenge of when to disclose to a CLHIV his or her HIV status. Despite WHO recommendations for CLHIV to know their status, in countries most affected by HIV, effective resources are often limited, and national guidance on disclosure is often lacking.
