Juliette Forrest: Writing stories inspired by colour
I spent most of my childhood surrounded by pens and pencils, colouring things in. It came as no surprise when I announced to my parents I wanted to be an art director. Years of slaving away on eye-catching layouts for press ads, posters and websites fuelled my obsession for the names of colours – especially the ones on paint charts. Yellow was never plain old boring yellow: it was Luscious Lemon Drops or Downy Duckling or Treasure Island Gold or Tuscan Sun.

Why book sharing is about much more than literacy
The number of books in the home, and children’s early exposure to stories is often used to predict literacy and how a child will learn to read. But while reading to children is an important activity, it’s not a guarantee they will learn to read. But it certainly will help. When we talk about reading to children, what comes to mind? There are lots of different situations where children will have stories read with or to them.

Alan Bissett: Is writing in Scots an act of resistance?
I’m often described as someone who writes in ‘Scots’, but I’m not sure if that’s true in the strictest sense. If what’s meant is the heritage language which dates back to the 15th Century, deriving – but also distinct – from the northern form of Old English, with all its ‘hoolets’, howfs‘ and ‘houghmagandies’, then no, I’m not a ‘Scots’ writer. Reading that archaic language still connects me to a country which, in the main, is gone, a victim of English linguistic imperialism and marginalisation.

Gerda Stevenson: Thoughts on writing in Scots and English
“Why do you choose to write in Scots?” I’m often asked. And then, sometimes, the follow-up: “Is it a political act?” If we were to substitute English for Scots in the above, I expect many writers would be bemused. To me, these questions come from a narrow, monoglot perspective, representing a linguistic imperialism, the assumption that the act of writing in Scots is somehow an assertive statement, a rebellion even, throwing down a gauntlet - a deliberate deviation from an establishment norm.
Neither useful nor ornamental: Why Scots matters
Some fowk think that there’s nae sic thing as writin in Scots. That there’s nae richt spellins, or grammar, or tenses. That the notion o a Scots dictionary is a joke MacGuffin wi the laugh built in, like a left-haundit screwdriver or a tin o tartan paint. That writin in Scots jist means makkin it up as ye gang alang. Man, man. If they anely kent the hauf o it. See, writin o ony kind is an experiment; or it should be.

Five ways to include more scent in your writing
Tagged: five things, writng tips Thursday 31 January 2019 Would you do something for me? Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and imagine the scent of freshly mown grass. What came to mind? The first days of spring? Sports fields and ball games? Hay fever? Picnics? Something else entirely? Neurologically, our sense of smell is linked to memory and emotion. Even merely thinking of a scent you’ve previously experienced is likely to conjure up all kinds of associations.
