Burlington Composite Squadron - Three Events in One Day
By: Captain S. R. Morrison, CAP Asst. Personnel Officer, North Carolina Wing Group 4 The Burlington Composite Squadron, joined by a member of the Orange County Composite Squadron, was omnipresent at Southeast High School’s five football games, from the Color Guard presenting colors to a massive fundraiser at the concession stand and recruitment table.
Incidental tumor retrieval during point-of-care-ultrasound-guided thoracentesis
While vacationing in Mexico, a woman in her 70s presented to primary care with a 6-month history of B symptoms, worsening dyspnea, and new-onset back pain. Her medical history included treated ductal carcinoma in situ and a 50-pack-year smoking history. Diagnostic imaging revealed liver, lung, and bone lesions. A liver biopsy was inconclusive, only identifying an undifferentiated carcinoma of unknown primary. The woman was advised to return to Canada for ongoing investigation.
Manifesting a Clutter-free Environment
Moving beyond visualization and affirmation Numerous research studies indicate that clutter impacts mental health and productivity (see a reference list below). While we have all heard the adage that brilliant people are often messy (Einstein is the poster child example), research suggests that most of us do not function well surrounded by clutter at home or at the office. Why does this matter?
Money and Shame
S. L. Morrison · Follow Published in Write A Catalyst · 4 min read · -- Getting control of your finances is about more than frugality Photo: Sasun Bughdaryan, Unsplash. As a divorced single mother, I lived through bankruptcy and a house foreclosure. At 50, I liquidated everything and moved to the West Coast for graduate school with my dog, a few boxes of clothes and photographs, and a leased car. But until recently, I had not confronted the truth of what led to such financial disaster.
Old Lovers
S. L. Morrison · Follow 1 min read · -- A poem Stockphotos.com Grief has changed me. When we lie in bed at night, holding hands, watching TV, I lean over and kiss you, more often than before, with an urgency that wasn’t always there. You beam happily, and I’m glad you don’t know. You don’t know that I imagine a life after your death— dreading those future nights when I will be alone, remembering these happy banal moments.
My dog has better primary care than I do
S. L. Morrison · Follow Published in Write A Catalyst · 3 min read · -- And I have private insurance…. Stockphoto.com When I say that my dog has better healthcare than I do, I’m not joking. How sad is that? I want to know why. (And no, I am not getting any money for this post.) We belong to the Banfield Pet Hospital network. It works like this: · You pay a monthly fee. Basic subscription is $39,99 a month. · Subscribers get reduced fees on bloodwork and medication.
The Older You Get, the More Likely You are to Find “The One”
S. L. Morrison · Follow 3 min read · -- I was on the phone with my thirty-five-year-old son, who had recently broken up with his girlfriend. It was an ugly break-up, and it ended with him having to block her on his phone. I could hear how dejected he felt. It was his first real girlfriend in a long time. Though a brief romance, I believe he had loved her. I listened and resisted the motherly urge to offer advice or try to cheer him up. I knew that was useless.
Let It Go
S. L. Morrison · Follow 3 min read · -- You can’t control others, only yourself Elsa from Frozen/licensed through ShutterShock My two little nieces LOVED Frozen. At the top of their lungs, they would sing, “Let it go, let it go!” It struck me as a strangely sophisticated, heart wrenching sentiment to come out of a toddler’s mouth, but Disney had clearly tapped into a universal little girl or boy desire.
Why Servant Leadership matters more than ever in medicine
S. L. Morrison · Follow 3 min read · -- It’s more than some touchy-feely nonsense In 2022, for my dissertation, I studied leadership traits in medical students attending medical school in Washington and Oregon. Specifically, I wanted to find out if medical humanities courses impacted their servant leadership traits.
Courage in the Face of Immutable Times
Courage in the Face of Immutable Times Last week, we were in South Africa. It was a bucket list trip. We went on two safaris and saw so many amazing animals. It’s over 20 hours of flying from Seattle, but so worth it. What moved me the most though, was a trip to Robben Island. I thought it would be a typical museum tour with posters and a guide giving the history of the place, and it has a very long history, going back to the 15th century.
Toward Network‐Based Planetary Biosignatures: Atmospheric Chemistry as Unipartite, Unweighted, Undirected Networks
1 Introduction In the upcoming years and decades, astronomical observatories will characterize the chemical compositions of terrestrial exoplanet atmospheres and search for signs of life. However, the science of remote biosignature detection remains incomplete due in large part to a lack of a comprehensive understanding of how life emerges, evolves, and integrates into a planet's geochemical systems.

The aim of this work was to explore the feasibility of undertaking plantar pressure assessment during barefoot walking in people with stroke, and evaluate the repeatability of the assessment protocol and regional footprint analysis as a measure of dynamic foot characteristics.
