For the last decade, I have been preparing myself for the BIG death; the earth-shattering, life-changing, my world will never be the same, death. The type of event that hits so quickly, felt so deeply, that your entire body goes into auto-drive. I’ve often wondered, in my own dramatic way, what would I do when I heard life-shattering news? Would I fall to my knees? Would I go into a state of shock that I’d be unable to form words or thoughts or, would I grow cold & distant from those I loved?

Accepting my diagnosis was easy, convincing others that I couldn’t eat raw fruits and vegetables was harder. AFTER years of reactions, ranging from itching to unexplained anaphylaxis and trips to the hospital, there was finally an end to the guessing and questions. I had a diagnosis at the age of 24. My allergist explained that I have oral allergy syndrome (OAS). “You have a severe case of it,” he said.

I was beyond ready to leave my small rural hometown behind, determined to escape–because the last thing I wanted was to be 'stuck' in my farm town in Colorado like everyone else.
