What was your first job as a journalist?

I started off as a guest writer at my college newspaper and made my way up to feature editor by the end of the academic year.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No, and I don't plan on it. At least not for professional use. Maybe for fun, who knows.

How is social media changing news?

It's made journalism a two-way street between journalists and citizens. It compels journalists to develop many different digital media skills.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Clark Kent. Who doesn't like Superman?

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Being a journalist is about communicating the stories, information and ideas that democratic society needs in order to thrive.

Who do you wish followed you?

It doesn't really matter, as long as I get my work out to as many people as possible.

Why did you become a journalist?

I became a journalist so that I could use my skills and interests, like writing, digital media and news, in a way that serves the public.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

My high school newspaper was a class, so I only was part of it for a year. I wrote explanatory news as well as school news and features.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I did a profile on a professor who came to the United States from Ukraine because of the Russian invasion, and I was able to tell his story.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Determination is key. You have to chase after what you need and want. Also, know how to use digital tools in order to best tell a story.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time of day is fine, but I'll get back to you the fastest after 1:00 p.m.

What's your favorite drink?

Lemonade

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Hanging out with friends

The Wall Street Journal

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Many people think education is boring or doesn't affect them, but it actually affects our future and the way our society is shaped.
