What was your first job as a journalist?
My first staff job as a journalist was news editor at a large Toronto urban paper called eye, which was the first in North America to publish on the Internet.
How is social media changing news?
Social media — when used correctly — opens up the news process and makes it a collaboration and conversation with the former audience.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
E-mail. Use the subject line well. Put key details in the first 3 sentences.
Why did you become a journalist?
I am infinitely curious, wanted to learn something new every day, and help shed light on things people should know.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
One of the first articles on conflict minerals in cellphones; or the first "craplets" story: Inspired Apple ad (TV), Dell to launch craplet-free computers, WSJ plagiarism
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
As a student, think of yourself as a journalist. As a journalist, think of yourself as a student. If you're making a switch mid-career, learn the basics of ethics and standards. e.g. Don't report on things where you stand to benefit, sources don't get story approval, etc.
