The Lost Boys: The Byerley Turk and Godolphin Arabian
Pedigree Researcher Sally Wright looks at the influence of the three ‘foundation fathers’ of the Thoroughbred, and notably the fortunes of the waning male lines of the Godolphin Arabian and Byerley Turk, to ask, where are they now? Just as their famous Thoroughbred foundation fathers had done hundreds of years ago, three young stallions - Aesterius, Rosallion and Electrolyte - all retired to stud for the 2026 breeding season.
Sires Series: Too Darn Hot, not just a flicker
Pedigree Researcher Sally Wright looks at the race and stud career of new young stallion, Too Darn Hot. Despite the jazzy, US-sounding name, Too Darn Hot was very much English-bred and foaled in-house in 2016, a product of the legendary miler and sire, Dubawi, and the ‘very smart’ Dar Re Mi (by Singspiel), a mare who won up to a mile-and-a-half.
Sires Series: Sally Wright appraises the soaring fortunes of Starman
Pedigree Researcher Sally Wright appraises the racing record and soaring fortunes of Starman. The aptly-named Starman was born in 2017 from the union of Dutch Art and Northern Star, by Montjeu. Solidly British-bred, the bright bay entire hailed from Whatton Manor Stud in Nottinghamshire and was named for his owner’s love of the legendary musician, David Bowie.
Horseracing in Leeds: A brief history of Haigh Park racecourse
Pedigree Researcher Sally Wright looks back at the history of horseracing in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Throughout its long and illustrious sporting history, the city of Leeds in West Yorkshire, England, has been associated with cricket and rugby league at Headingley and football at Elland Road.
Sires Series: Sally Wright profiles Mehmas’ ascent to the top
An Irish-bred bay horse born in 2014, current sire sensation Mehmas came from the same nicking pattern as the impactful stallion, Dark Angel, being by Acclamation (from the rarer Northern Dancer sireline of Try My Best) out of a mare by Machiavellian.
Sires Series: Sally Wright profiles Saxon Warrior’s recent deep impact on the breeding scene
A Classic winner, all-round tough competitor and also sometime bridesmaid, Saxon Warrior captured the imagination of the racing world by combining an excellent work record, quality confirmation and (more unusually for an elite-level runner) being somewhat of an outcross, in that his sire came from East Asia, representing a line of Northern Dancer that is far more rare in modern western Thoroughbred breeding.
Sires Series: Sally Wright profiles Havana Grey, a transformative new force on the breeding scene
Havana Anna’s win in the Group 3 Lacken Stakes at Naas in mid-May this year marks the latest upturn for her young sire, Havana Grey. A British-bred and trained grey (by Havana Gold out of Blanc De Chine by Dark Angel), he was foaled in 2015 and trained throughout his racing career by the North Yorkshire-based Karl Burke, running at two and three years as a five-furlong specialist, winning six of his sixteen outings, with three seconds.

Sally Wright profiles Night Of Thunder, the sire of 2000 Guineas winner Bow Echo
Pedigree researcher Sally Wright takes a look at the race and stallion record of an up-and-coming elite stallion. The recent victory of Bow Echo in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket again brings into sharp focus how his sire, Night of Thunder, has already proven himself as a tour de force amongst new stallions. Night of Thunder, an Irish-bred Richard Hannon-trained chestnut (by Dubawi out of Forest Storm, a daughter of Galileo) was foaled in 2011.

Developing a Standard Measure of Job Quality
Introduction Over the past decade, a range of governments, including the UK, and inter-governmental bodies have advocated improving jobs as a route out of economic crisis, spurring competitiveness and delivering a sustainable future (e.g. European Commission [EC], 2012; G20, 2015; Green Jobs Taskforce, 2021; International Labour Organisation [ILO], 2018; OECD, 2018).
Are you feeling dissatisfied and unhappy with your life?
Feeling sad Was there a time when you felt more excited by things and generally happier? Feelings like this can creep up on us over time without us realising and we can find it difficult to know where they come from. We all have ups and downs in life and we cannot expect to feel happy all of the time, however, when you have a more prolonged and gradually increasing feeling of heaviness, like you’re carrying a burden on your shoulders, that’s when something needs to be addressed.
The Benefits of Having Human Customer Service Representatives in the Shipping Industry
AI-powered chatbots have made significant progress in customer service over the years. However, there is still a lot of room for improvement, especially in the shipping and logistics industry. This was highlighted by the recent DPD chatbot incident where a malfunctioning chatbot received a lot of negative media attention. Although digital customer service solutions can be quick and efficient, they often offer generic and automated responses that are not personalised to individual customers.

People hear what they can, not always what’s meant
When I first arrived in Utah 25 years ago, I attended Relief Society in the same LDS ward in Brigham City where my father grew up. I was a young newlywed, a college student at Utah State University, working nights at a restaurant and coping with massive culture shock from moving from my childhood home in Hawai’i to northern Utah. At the time, it was exhausting and stressful. I had seen snow maybe twice in my life before that first brutal winter, and I moved here with exactly two pairs of socks.

Vote Jesus: Love your neighbor, cast your vote
There are political signs everywhere these days. That’s mostly cool with me. Sometimes I wish folks would remember we’re talking about democracy, not a Texas football game, so a little dignity is appropriate, and there’s no need to be cultish in our devotion to candidates. But usually when I see a sign, I feel a rush of gratitude for living in a place where we are all legally allowed to share opinions. And on top of that, every adult citizen gets to vote, too. Pretty cool.
Big transitions remind us of the important basics
I should be helping my oldest son pack for college, but instead, I am making lists of what I ought to be doing while compulsively eating through another son’s bag of Hi-Chew candy. In just a few days, I will caravan with my oldest boy into Logan and leave him at a dorm at Utah State. We’ve been looking forward to this time for years, and yet we are wildly unprepared. I am the grown-up in this scenario, but I feel very much like a college freshman myself.
Serve carefully; don’t hurt feelings or bird nests
A couple weeks ago, my husband got a text from a church ward member asking him to help cut down a tree. “This is not the time of year to cut down trees,” I said to my husband. “They are full of bird nests. Wait until fall, or at least late summer, until the baby birds have flown away.” The tree was in the yard of an elderly woman in our neighborhood who has been in poor health lately. It was an enormous pine tree, maybe 30 feet tall, and its roots were threatening to crack the driveway cement.

Achieving Full Neurological Recovery in Snakebite using Best Supportive Care
A 29-year-old woman presented to a community hospital in Sierra Leone 2 hours after being bitten by an unknown snake. On arrival, she was agitated though alert, however deteriorated into respiratory arrest. There was no local availability of antivenom. The patient remained in respiratory arrest undergoing best supportive care in a low-resource setting for 2 hours 55 minutes before returning to spontaneous ventilation. She went on to make a full neurological recovery.
Stakeholder perceptions of a new model of care for medication supply at hospital discharge
Objectives Problems relating to patients’ medication are common during hospital discharge, often resulting in unnecessary harm to patients and even hospital readmission. To overcome these issues and improve patient discharge, an evidence-based approach was used to develop an innovative model of care for the supply of medication at hospital discharge. The model increases pharmacy involvement, uses community pharmacies in the supply process and encourages patient follow-up after discharge.

UK hospital patient discharge: the patient perspective
Objectives Hospital discharge is a complex process that can result in errors and delays for patients, particularly around the supply of medicines and communication of information. To improve patient discharge, patient perspectives of the discharge service must be explored to determine where patients feel problems arise. This study aimed to explore inpatient perceptions and experiences of the current discharge process.

The male bloodline of the Byerley Turk
As we enter a new racing year, it seems opportune to reflect upon some of the early sources of influence on today's modern Thoroughbred racehorse. The imported Eastern foundation stallions; the Byerley Turk, the Darley Arabian and the Godolphin Arabian, stand apart for their contributions to the breed and are among only a handful of original imports with male bloodlines surviving to the present day. The earliest arrival, the brown Byerley Turk (c.
