On the morning of 11 September, 2001, my teacher rushed into our seventh-grade classroom with her hand over her mouth, eyes-wide with fear. She clicked on the TV, and my world changed. The World Trade Centre’s North Tower was already ablaze, and soon we would watch a plane dive into the second tower. I was a 12-year-old middle school student living in a mostly white suburban neighbourhood in Marietta, Georgia.
