Unfinished truths | Sam Forstag
Last month, I was elected western Montana’s Democratic nominee for Congress, one of the great honors of my life. Since then, in the rare quiet moments, I’ve found myself thinking about history, and about all the men and women who’ve dedicated themselves to building this country. Today, as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of American Independence, these reflections on our nation’s past continue to fill me with an abiding hope for our future. kAm%H@ 2?5 2 92=7 46?EFC:6D 28@[ :?

Meet The Montana Smokejumper Who Wants to Put Out Fires in Congress
During its peak, DOGE cut about 5,000 public lands employees from federal agencies like the Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the National Park Service. Many consider this move — and others like it— an indication that the Trump administration is setting the stage to privatize America’s national parks. With a federal government determined to destroy as many public goods as possible, it’s clear we need an active resistance in Congress more than ever.
Help keep Montana great with a ‘yes’ on 6 mill levy
For 70 years, the 6 mill levy has helped keep Montana great by creating economic opportunity, funding research and helping Montanans of all backgrounds and income brackets access higher education. Publicly funded universities are a cornerstone of a prosperous and free society, and since 1948, the 11 campuses of the Montana University System have depended on the 6 mill levy for over 10 percent of their annual funding.
A threat to voter access
The state of Montana should do everything it can to make it easier for folks to vote.If passed into law, the Ballot Interference Prevention Act, House Bill 212, would do the opposite of that.HB 212 would create a significant hurdle to individuals wishing to exercise their most basic civic duty, casting their ballot.
Lawmakers should pitch in half the cost for Montana’s public universities
This legislative session, let’s make a commitment to the future of Montana families and students by committing enough public funding to cover at least half the cost of public universities in Montana. Our state currently pitches in about 39 percent of the cost of education for the Montana University System, an amount that pales in comparison to the national average of 54 percent.
UM, MSU stand together for public lands
There’s a student movement afoot in the last best place.University students in our great state are joining together and letting it be known they recognize and celebrate the vital role that public lands play in the everyday lives of all Montanans. The Associated Students of both the University of Montana (ASUM) and Montana State University (ASMSU) passed resolutions this spring urging our elected officials to maintain federal management of American public lands.
