Vanishing Crater Lake species sends ominous signal for iconic lake's health
The view from Crater Lake's rim is picture perfect: deep blue water filling an ancient volcanic caldera, its surface gleaming beneath the Oregon sky. Visitors can peer down from the overlooks and see little evidence that anything is wrong. This video created with the assistance of AI. But beneath the surface, Crater Lake National Park's ecosystem is changing, and no one is certain what the future will look like for the deepest lake in the country.

The unlikeliest attraction in Mount Rainier National Park only lasted months
On a summer day, Mount Rainier National Park's Paradise area delivers exactly what its name promises. Its sprawling meadow on the mountain's south flank is covered in purple lupine, scarlet paintbrush and pure white avalanche lily, all backed by glaciers atop the tallest volcano in the Lower 48. Lucky visitors may hear the sharp whistle of a marmot on the wind as they walk the short trail to popular Myrtle Falls.

(Eric Thayer/Los Angeles Times/Getty Images) The Interior Department's effort to root out "negative" portrayals of American history at national parks has instead become a forum for criticism of the Trump administration's handling of the National Park Service.
Comments from national park 'snitch signs' have been released. They're wild.
1 day ago The surprising demand to appear at a hearing suggested new concern about the Trump administration’s efforts to repay the full $166 billion owed from illegally imposed tariffs. A federal trade court has ordered Rodney S. Scott, the head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, to appear at a hearing …
Crater Lake snowpack collapse could fuel fires, reshape ecosystem
Snow levels at Crater Lake National Park have dropped to their lowest levels ever recorded for this time of year, a troubling sign for the surrounding region as the Pacific Northwest heads toward the dry summer months. In reviewing daily measurements from the past two weeks, senior meteorologist Tom Wright told SFGATE that the park's snow depth was the lowest on record for that time period, despite a recent storm that dropped more than a foot of snow in the area.
What to know about carrying guns in national parks -- and how rules might change
A new lawsuit from the nonprofit Second Amendment Foundation challenges rules banning firearms in national park buildings, including visitor centers, ranger stations and offices. The lawsuit, filed March 27 in federal court in Texas, was brought by the foundation alongside the Firearms Policy Coalition and firearms instructor Gary Zimmerman, who frequently visits national parks.

Bee truck crashes near Crater Lake, releasing millions of honeybees
A buzzing sound was the first thing Tristen Tartaglia noticed. It wasn't coming from traffic on the nearby highway, nor was it the voices of the volunteers scrambling over the embankment. It was the sound of millions of imperiled bees. Their buzzing was so loud it felt unnatural, Tartaglia, a commercial beekeeper, told SFGATE - a kind of "atomic presence" hanging in the air near the road outside Crater Lake National Park in Oregon.
I tried living the park ranger fantasy and spent most of it picking up garbage
The road curves gently through a valley, running alongside a fast-moving river, and a granite monolith resembling Yosemite's El Capitan lords it above the forest in the distance. From the seat of my pickup truck, I refocus on my immediate surroundings: a national park trailhead sign leans off-center, a fire ring sits full of debris and an overused picnic table looks ready to collapse. In the corner of my eye, I notice something dashing through the trees. A bear?
Historic hotel near Crater Lake to temporarily house employees, not visitors
One of the closest lodging options to Crater Lake National Park has a new owner - but visitors hoping to stay there will have to wait. The historic 24-room Prospect Hotel, located about 20 miles from the park's entrance in the small Oregon town of Prospect, has been purchased by Kansas-based hospitality company ExplorUS, according to Jackson County property records and the property's previous lending company ThorMar LLC.
Future of legendary 150-mile Rainier ride uncertain after permit denial
For decades, cyclists have gathered before dawn in the shadow of Washington's Mount Rainier to attempt something that borders on absurd: riding 150 miles around the massive volcano in a single day. The event, known as Ride Around Mount Rainier in One Day - or RAMROD - sends riders through towering forests, steep mountain passes and long switchbacks that together add up to nearly 10,000 feet of climbing.

Visitation is booming at America's 'deadliest national park'
North Cascades National Park, a rugged wilderness of jagged peaks and dense evergreen forests in northwest Washington, is usually one of the least visited national parks. But recent visitation numbers show that this half-million-acre hidden gem might be finally catching the public's eye.
Olympic National Park's furry guardians could gain endangered status
The Olympic marmot, a chubby, whistling ground squirrel found only in the high alpine meadows in and around Olympic National Park, has finally made progress toward federal protection. After nearly two years of silence about the creature's dwindling numbers, federal wildlife officials have taken a long-awaited first step after a lawsuit accused the agency of missing legally required deadlines.
Instagram video leads to federal charge against Yosemite National Park visitor
A California man accused of BASE jumping off Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park has been charged with a federal offense, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California. Federal prosecutors allege that Jack Matthew Propeck violated park rules by using a parachute to descend into Yosemite Valley on Oct. 8, 2025, an activity that is prohibited in all national parks except in emergencies or with a valid permit.
Recent deaths show the dangers of the West Coast's tallest volcano
The deaths of two experienced climbers on Mount Rainier this month have once again drawn attention to a hard truth about Washington's most iconic peak and the West Coast's tallest volcano: Even for seasoned adventurers, the mountain can turn lethal with little warning. Jiri Richter, 51, and Ben Watson, 35, were found dead near the Wilson Glacier on Jan. 20 at roughly 9,600 feet after failing to return from a January climb, according to the National Park Service.
National parks are flip-flopping on reservation systems. It's a big problem.
In recent months, the National Park Service has sent mixed signals about the future of reservation systems - a relatively new crowd-control tool for parks that has been expanded, scaled back and, in some cases, quietly reversed across the country's busiest parks. Nowhere has the flip-flopping been clearer than at Mount Rainier National Park.
Environmentalists worry Google behind bid to control Oregon town's water
Along the scenic shores of one of the Pacific Northwest's most stunning rivers, a water dispute is growing between environmentalists and a city where Google devours nearly a third of its water resources. A proposal to transfer ownership of a slice of Mount Hood National Forest to the city of the Dalles is raising alarm among public lands advocates, who see it as a test case for how Oregon manages water resources amid a boom in data centers and increased drought concerns in the region.
Mount Rainier drops timed-entry reservations for 2026 summer
Following in Yosemite's footsteps, another major national park on the West Coast is dropping a method for crowd management. Washington's Mount Rainier National Park will not require timed-entry reservations during the 2026 summer season, quietly ending a short-lived experiment that park officials had adjusted repeatedly over the past two years.

After a sudden shutdown, a Crater Lake landmark faces an uncertain future
After months of uncertainty following a dramatic foreclosure, the fate of a historic hotel outside Crater Lake National Park remains in limbo. A public listening session is scheduled for Jan.
Lawmakers propose declaration of emergency to restore Mount Rainier bridge access
Washington lawmakers introduced legislation Tuesday aimed at restoring access to Mount Rainier National Park via the Fairfax Bridge "as soon as possible," eight months after the state shut down the 103-year-old crossing. The historic bridge, just south of the small towns of Wilkeson and Carbonado, was closed by the Washington State Department of Transportation in April after inspectors deemed it unsafe.
National parks across Washington reeling from historic storms
Relentless rain pounding the Pacific Northwest has triggered flooding and landslides across Washington's national parks over the past week, wreaking havoc in some of the state's most remote destinations. The region has been hit by unusually strong atmospheric rivers over the past couple of weeks, which are intense, narrow bands of moisture in the sky that can unleash more than a foot of rain in just days.
Congress reopens battle over the name of North America's tallest peak
The battle over the name of North America's tallest mountain has returned to Washington, reviving a dispute that spans more than a century. On his first day back in office in January, President Donald Trump wiped away a decade of precedent by restoring "Mount McKinley" as the federal name for Alaska's iconic peak, reversing the Barack Obama-era recognition of Mount Denali that had been pushed for by Indigenous groups and Alaskans since the 1970s.

Nearly a dozen mauled by grizzly during British Columbia field trip
A terrifying grizzly bear attack on a school field trip in remote British Columbia has left 11 people injured - two of them critically - and set off a massive search for the sow and her two cubs. The bear burst out of the forest near the Nuxalk Nation reserve community of 4 Mile last week, charging at a group of fourth- and fifth-grade schoolchildren and teachers who had stopped for lunch along a walking trail.
One of America's tallest national park peaks is shrinking
The height of mountains may seem constant, but Washington's five ice-capped peaks - including Mount Rainier National Park's namesake summit - have been shrinking. A new study published in the journal Arctic, Antarctic and Alpine Research states that all of the mountains are topped with a perennial layer of snow and ice that's been been melting for decades.
Heartbreaking whale death highlights big problem on the West Coast
On an Oregon beach just north of the city of Yachats, a quiet crowd gathered over several days last weekend as a young humpback whale lay stranded and dying on the sand. People returned to the shoreline again and again, some even wading into the cold surf just to be a little closer - as if standing beside the animal might somehow help. Before long, they began calling him Hope, a small gesture that reflected their wish to see the whale make it back to open water.

After bridge failure, a national park gateway faces its ghost town moment
When the Fairfax Bridge closed in April, cutting off rural gateway towns from Mount Rainier National Park, along with the tourism dollars they relied on, the 500-resident town Wilkeson could have withered. Instead, the tiny former mining town is trying to reinvent itself - and fighting to convince state officials to help it survive.
Drone pilots are behaving very badly in national parks

In Olympic National Park, the wilderness is taking the roads back
