Jordan Chiles never shies away from the spotlight. An Olympic medalist with endless energy and eye-catching swagger, she has Hollywood written all over her. But don’t count on her to follow a script. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics came and went in a flash. Chiles checked off a lifelong dream and added an Olympic silver medal to her trophy case back home. It was supposed to be the storybook ending to her time as an elite gymnast. “Jordan was adamant she was done,” said Gina Chiles, Jordan’s mom.

I’ll never forget covering my first football game. The blazing September sun beating down on my black pants. Climbing escalator after escalator. Entering the Rose Bowl press box for the first time. But what I remember most came long after the game had ended. Walking across the field after the postgame press conference, I took a moment to look up around me. There it was. One of the most iconic stadiums in the world – one that had held nearly 70,000 people just an hour before – entirely empty.
