Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I co-hosted a radio show my last year of college. We went over current events and some interviews.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes.

How is social media changing news?

People probably aren't reading as much beyond a headline as they should.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Clark Kent

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To shine a light on stories that need to be lifted up and to bring your own honest voice to the world.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email. More specifically, through my Gmail account.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

WordPress, Google Docs, Audio Recorder, Zoom.

What's your favorite social network?

C'est n'existe pas.

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I generally enjoy it and seem to be decent at it.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Nope. Thought about it but never had a free spot on the course schedule.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Whenever I talk to Grant Morrison, Neil Gaiman, or Scott Snyder, it results in something special. Scott Derrickson was a good recent one too.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Do the work. And remember that editors and notes are meant to help you do the work better.

When's the best time to pitch you?

In the afternoon (EST).

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Oh, you're trying to get me in trouble.

What's your favorite drink?

White chocolate mocha

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In bed, I would hope.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Rolling Stone

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That we're just chasing click-bait headlines. Some people do. I don't do it consciously.
